No. 14 Men’s Hockey Falls to No. 12 Denver in Season Opener, 5-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

DAYTON, Ohio – The No. 14 Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 12 Denver, 5-2, in the opening round of the Lefty McFadden Invitational Friday at the E.J. Nutter Center in Dayton. The game opened the season for both teams, dropping the Buckeyes to 0-1 and moving Denver to 1-0. The Buckeyes fall to the consolation game of the tournament and will face Miami at 4:35 p.m. Saturday. Denver will face St. Lawrence in the championship tilt at 7:35 p.m. The Saints topped the RedHawks, 3-1, in the first round.
The first period ended with the teams tied at one, as each team netted a power-play goal. Denver took a 1-0 lead 7:31 into the game, as Jon Foster scored his first goal of the season. Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) tied the game with a power-play goal of his own at 16:07, as Dan Knapp (So., Rochester, Mich.) fed him the puck from behind the net and he beat DU goalie Adam Berkhoel over the left shoulder. Andrew Schembri (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario) also assisted on the goal, marking his first Buckeye career point. Ohio State had nine shots on goal, Denver six.
In the second period, Denver outscored the Buckeyes, 3-1, to go into the third with a 4-2 lead. Denver regained the lead (2-1) at the 7:22 mark, as Jeff Drummond tallied. DU’s Greg Keith scored on a breakaway at 11:31 to push the score to 3-1. The Buckeyes then cut the lead to one, as Dave Steckel (Sr., West Bend, Wis.) scored on a two-on-one, with an assist from Knapp, at 13:44. The Pioneers regained a two-goal edge less than two minutes later, when Drummond scored his second goal of the game at 15:24. The Buckeyes put eight shots on net in the period, while Denver had 12.
Denver put the game away with an unassisted goal by Luke Fulghum at 17:57 following an Ohio State turnover near the blueline. DU outshot the Buckeyes in the stanza, 10-8.
The Buckeyes stopped Denver on 6-of-7 power plays, allowing just two shots, and went 1-for-10 on the power play. The Buckeyes had eight penalties for 16 minutes, while the Pioneers were called for 11 penalties and 22 PIM.
OSU goalie Mike Betz (Sr., Elizabeth, Pa.) started the game and played all 60 minutes, making 24 saves on 29 DU shots. Berkhoel had 23 saves on 25 Buckeye shots.
The Buckeyes drop to 22-17-2 all-time in season openers. It is the second consecutive season the squad lost its first game of the year, as it fell to Minnesota, 7-2, in a neutral-site game last season.
