DULUTH, Minn.–In a back-and-forth, high-scoring battle Friday night with the third-ranked team in the nation, Minnesota-Duluth, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell, 7-6, in overtime. Emma Laaksonen (Fr., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) had a two-goal game and was named the second star of the game and Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) had the game-tying tally. Following the league loss, the Buckeyes are 11-13-3 overall and 8-8-3 in the WCHA. The Bulldogs improve to 20-4-3 overall and 12-4-3 in league play.
At 10:22 in the first stanza, UMD’s Joanna Eustace put the Bulldogs on the board first with a power-play goal from Navada Russell. After OSU’s Emily Hudak (So., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing Academy) was whistled for holding the stick at 14:49, Hanne Sikio capitalized on the man advantage and slapped the puck past April Stojak, (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) off goalie Tuula Puputti’s clear. Then at 17:04, Jeanne Chapple (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Moundsview) picked off Laaksonen’s pass just in front of the blue line and fired a decisive shot into the back of the UMD net. The Bulldogs skated into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.
UMD went ahead, 3-1, in the second when Tricia Guest got an unassisted tally at 4:16. The Buckeyes then enjoyed a 5-on-3 advantage when Brittny Ralph and Pamela Pachal received body checking and roughing minors at 7:21 and 8:28, respectively. Laaksonen scored a power-play goal at 9:51 from Kelli Halcisak (Fr., Grosse Isle, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary’s) and Chapple. Eustace responded with her second of the night at 11:02. At 13:21, Halcisak coasted the puck past Puputti for an unassisted goal. Three minutes later, at 16:39, Laaksonen took advantage of a distracted Puputti. Puputti had lost her stick and borrowed one from UMD defender Jessica Smith, but could not fend off Laaksonen’s shot to the high left corner. Laaksonen’s tally was her second of the night and 12th of the season. Heather Farrell (Fr., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret) earned an assist. With 1:35 remaining in the second, Erin O’Grady (Fr., London, Ontario/Culver) notched her seventh of the season on a backhanded shot. Lindsey Ogren (So., North Oaks, Minn./Moundsview) and Hudak had assists to help give OSU a 5-4 edge. UMD’s Pachal tied things up at 6:52 in the third stanza with her fifth of the season. At 11:14, Corinne Rosen (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Pomfret) took a shot, which was saved and deflected. Frost snagged the rebound while lying on her stomach and slid the puck in the net. Frost’s goal was her 15th on the season. The Buckeyes spent the remainder of the third period hanging onto a one-point lead until Eustace converted with 2:20 remaining. Sikio and Puputti earned assists on Eustace’s goal, which completed her hat trick and sent the game into overtime.
Just 38 seconds into the five-minute sudden victory overtime period, Eustace scored her fourth goal of the night and earned the win for the Bulldogs.
OSU converted on two-of-five power-play opportunites and held the Bulldogs to three goals in five chances.
The Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes, 37-26. Stojak recorded 30 saves and UMD’s Puputti stopped 20 Buckeye shots.
Ohio State returns to the ice at 8:05 p.m. EST Saturday in the series finale against UMD at the DECC Arena.
