%^$DULUTH, Minn.-Despite an outstanding team effort, the Ohio State women’s hockey team (5-6-3 overall, 2-5-3 in the WCHA) was unable to hand No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth (7-0-3 overall, 4-0-3 in the WCHA) its first loss of the season Saturday, tying the defending national champion, 3-3, in overtime. Buckeye offensive defenseman Emma Laaksonen (So., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) scored Ohio State’s first goal and was named the third star of the game. Jeni Creary’s (Fr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame College) two goals nearly gave the Buckeyes the upset. Ohio State leaves Duluth with an 0-1-1 record after falling to the Bulldogs, 4-2, Friday in game one.%^$
%^$Ohio State converted on its first shot of the game. Laaksonen got control of the puck from UMD’s Erika Holst deep in the Bulldogs’ zone and her shot in the slot made it past Tuula Puputti. The unassisted goal was Laaksonen’s fourth of the season. After the Buckeyes successfully killed off a 5-on-3, they watched their 1-0 lead disintegrate. At the 15:44 mark of the first stanza, Hanne Sikio tallied on the rebound of Satu Kiipeli’s point shot. Laurie Alexander had the secondary assist. Then at 17:34, the Bulldogs went up, 2-1, off Sikio’s second goal of the night. Alexander and Holst recorded assists.%^$
%^$At 8:28 in the second period, the Buckeyes took advantage of their second power-play opportunity of the night and knotted the game at two. Shana Frost’s (Jr., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) shot was blocked by the defense and Heather Farrell (So., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret) picked up the loose puck. Farrell’s shot bounced off Puputti’s right pad but Jeni Creary was ready to tip in the rebound for her 13th goal of the season and fourth on the power play. The second period was characteristically physical with most of the action taking place in the neutral zone.%^$
%^$Just 3:05 into the third stanza, Creary knocked in her second goal of the game off a rebound shot. Jennifer Desson (Fr., Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s) recorded the assist. Melissa Glaser (So., Rockford, Ill./St. Mark’s) had an outstanding third period in net, preventing the Bulldogs’ from converting on multiple scoring chances. Her best saves of the game came at 7:55 and 14:30, respectively, when she managed a glove save on Larissa Luther’s slapshot and stopped Tricia Guest’s breakaway shot. Behind strong forechecking, Ohio State was able to hang on to the lead until Navada Russell tied the game with 1:44 remaining. Kristina Petrovskaia and Laurie Alexander had the assists on Russell’s goal, which sent the game into overtime, the Buckeyes’ fifth trip to an extra session this season.%^$
%^$Neither team was able to convert in the five minute sudden-victory overtime period.%^$
%^$UMD outshot Ohio State, 26-22. Glaser stopped 23 UMD shots. The Bulldogs split time between two goaltenders. Puputti played 33:59 and registered 10 saves, while Patricia Sautter minded the net for 31:01, tallying nine stops.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes converted on one of five power-play chances and held the Bulldogs to one goal in five opportunities.%^$
%^$Ohio State is idle this weekend for the first time all season. The Buckeyes return to the road Dec. 7-8 for a series with league foe Minnesota State, Mankato at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn.%^$
