COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by a suffocating defense and balanced offensive attack, the Ohio State women’s basketball team earned its eighth straight win of the 2000-01 campaign, obliterating Arkansas Pine Bluff 94-32 Saturday afternoon at Value City Arena.
The win gives Ohio State its best start to a season since an 8-0 start in the national runner-up 1992-93 season. Only the 1972-73 team, with 14-consecutive wins to open the season, has posted a better start.
The 62-point margin of victory is the fourth largest in Ohio State history and the largest since a 59-point thrashing of Ohio Wesleyan in 1975 (91-32). Senior co-captain Jamie Lewis (Oak Hill, Ohio) paced the Buckeyes with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, leading three Buckeyes in double figures. She also added six assists. Caity Matter (Fr., Bluffton, Ohio) added a career-best 17 points, while LaToya Turner (So., Pickerington, Ohio) chipped in 13 points and three blocked shots.
Every healthy Buckeye on the roster played at least 11 minutes in the contest, with 10-of-11 scoring five points or more. No Buckeye played more than 26 minutes in the game.
The swarming Buckeye defense held UAPB to 28.6 percent shooting, while forcing 36 Golden Lionette turnovers. The Buckeye offense benefited from the stellar defensive performance, shooting 55.2 percent for the contest, including a 60.9 percent clip in the second half.
Arkansas Pine Bluff remains winless on the season at 0-8. Ohio State returns to Value City Arena Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. tilt with in-state foe Akron.
