COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ron O’Brien Diving Well inside of the magnificent McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion will be the place to be for a host of divers this week as The Ohio State University hosts the NCAA Zone C diving championships.

Approximately 90 divers from as many as 31 schools will take part in the three-day event that will qualify 10 women and seven men into their respective NCAA championship meets. The women’s NCAA swimming and diving championships are March 17-19 at the University of Texas and the men’s NCAA championships are set for March 24-26 at the University of Minnesota.

Dates and Times  All three days of competitive diving this week are open to the public and are free to attend. The championships will run Thursday, March 10 through Saturday, March 12. The schedule:

  • Thursday at 1 p.m.: Men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter competition;
  • Friday at 1 p.m.: Men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter;
  • Saturday at 11 a.m. – Women’s 10-meter platform followed by a 30-minute break and then the men’s 10-meter platform.

Parking  Hourly parking is available at the Lane Ave. Garage, Tuttle Park Place Garage and the Ohio Stadium surface lots (look for blue meters to purchase hourly tickets).

Competing Schools  In addition to the host school Ohio State, schools in Zone C who may have divers competing in the championships include: Akron, Ball State, Butler, Cleveland State, Cincinnati, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Evansville, Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana, IUPUI, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oakland, Purdue, Southern Illinois (Carbondale), Illinois-Chicago, Valparaiso, Western Illinois, Western Kentucky, Wright State, Xavier and Youngstown State.

Let’s Go Bucks!  Five Ohio State student-athletes have qualified to compete at the Zone C championships this week: women’s team members Bianca Alvarez, Kristen Asman and Katie Bell; and men’s divers Christian Holstein and Shane Miszkiel. Here’s a look at each of them:

Bianca Alvarez – Jr., Miami, Fla. (Miami Sunset H.S.): Bianca was fourth on 3-meter and ninth on 1-meter at the 2011 Big Ten championships … she has won nine times in 2010-11, is a four-time NCAA diving All-American, a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree … she was NCAA runner-up as a freshman in 2008 on 3-meter and has two seconds and two thirds at Big Ten championship meets … this past summer (2010) Bianca was runner-up on the 3-meter springboard at the AT&T National Diving Championships held at Texas A&M University, which ties her best finish in a senior national event (2009 USA Diving Spring Nationals) … she is a three-time Big Ten Diver of the Week honoree this year … she is majoring in molecular genetics.

Kristen Asman – Jr., Columbus, Ohio (Fort Hayes H.S.): Kristen was fourth on 10-meter and 13th on 1-meter at the 2011 Big Ten championships … she is a four-time All-American with personal best finishes of fourth and eighth on the 10-meter platform event at the 2008 and 2009 NCAA championships, respectively … she was third on the 10-meter platform at the 2009 Big Ten championships and seventh on 1-meter … she was named to the inaugural Big Ten Distinguished Scholar’s list (3.7 GPA and above), and is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree … Kristen is majoring in education and human ecology.  

Katie Bell – Sr., Columbus, Ohio (Graham H.S.): Katie, in her first meet back since injuring a a shoulder in Feb. 2010, won gold on synchro 10-meter and silver on the 10-meter platform at the 2011 USA Diving Winter Nationals in February in Iowa City, Iowa … she was eighth on the 10-meter platform at the 2011 Big Ten championships after missing the championships in 2010 because of her shoulder injury … she was second on 10-meter platform at 2009 Big Ten championships …  Katie is an NCAA All-American by virtue of her fifth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA championships on platform … she won a U.S. Diving national championship on platform in August 2009 in Tallahassee, Fla. … she is majoring in social work.

Christian Holstein – Fr., Upper Arlington, Ohio (Upper Arlington H.S.): Christian will be seeking to qualify for his first NCAA championships … in his first Big Ten championship competition two weeks ago, he made the championship final on 3-meter and finished eighth … he also competed on 1-meter … he won twice this year as a freshman, on the 1- and 3-meter boards in a dual meet against Wright State.

Shane Miszkiel – Fr., Victoria, British Columbia (Clarement H.S.): Shane won seven times as a freshman, including sweeping all three boards at the Hawkeye Invitational in January … he scored on all three boards at the 2011 Big Ten championships with a third-place finish on 1-meter, sixth on 30-meter and ninth on 10-meter … he will be seeking to qualify for his first NCAA championships this weekend.

Head Coach Vince Panzano  Just the third diving coach in the long, proud tradition of Ohio State diving, Vince Panzano is the dean of Ohio State coaches with his 33 years of head coaching service to his alma mater. Panzano has coached 12 NCAA champions with Chelsea Davis (2008; 3-meter) and Sean Moore (2008; 10-meter) his most recent champions. He has also coached eight Olympians and 54 Big Ten Conference champions.
