No. 1 UCLA (21-2) vs. No. 17-32 Virginia Tech (17-5) — 11 a.m.
UCLA notes: Currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, UCLA breezed through its regional, posting wins over Western Michigan (4-0) and San Diego State (4-1) … UCLA enters the NCAA Championships ranked No. 1 for the first time since 1996, when it lost in the finals to Stanford, 4-1.

Virginia Tech notes: The Hokies advance to the round of 16 for the first time since the regional format was adopted in 1994 … Virginia Tech is led by brothers Aaron and Adam Marchetti. Aaron, a senior, is ranked No. 17 in the nation while Adam, a sophomore, clinched the 4-3 victory over Alabama in the second round … VT is the lowest ranked team (No. 33-48) in the round of 16.

No. 8 Florida (19-5) vs. No. 9 SMU (28-4) — 11 a.m.
Florida notes: The Gators defeated South Florida in the second round, 4-1, advancing them to their seventh Sweet 16 in the last nine years … should Florida beat SMU, it will be its first trip past the Sweet 16 since 1993, when the Gators lost to Georgia in the quarterfinals.

SMU notes: SMU reached the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year in narrowly defeating TCU 4-3 in the second round … No. 6 singles player, Gerardo Mulas, clinched the victory against the Horned Frogs, winning 6-4 in the third with the match tied 3-3 … the Mustangs win came on their home courts, the first time the school has ever hosted a men’s tennis regional.

No. 4 Duke (24-4) vs. No. 13 Kentucky (17-9) — 8 a.m.
Duke notes: The Blue Devils defeated host Clemson in the second round for their 18th consecutive win … Duke returns to the Sweet 16 following a one-year absence. They have advanced to the Sweet 16 six out of the last seven years … Duke lost a total of 27 games in singles in its first and second round matches.

Kentucky notes: The Wildcats cruised past fellow SEC member South Carolina 4-0 in the second round … Kentucky did not lose a set in either of its first two matches … rankings wise, this second round match was the toughest. It pitted the nation’s No. 13 and No. 14 teams against each other.

No. 5 LSU (18-6) vs. No. 17-32 Fresno State (20-8) — 8 a.m.
LSU notes: LSU, the host school in its regional, beat in-state rival Tulane to advance to the round of 16 … The Tigers advanced to the semifinals of last year’s championships, losing to host Georgia 4-2 in the semifinals.

Fresno State notes: Fresno State returns to the NCAA Championships after a one-year absence … the Bulldogs reached the Sweet 16 four straight years from 1994-97 and advanced to the quarterfinals in 1996 before losing to UCLA … Fresno State upset No. 12 USC in front of a raucous crowd in Fresno to advance to the Sweet 16. It marked the second time in three years the Bulldogs have defeated their archrivals from Southern California in the second round. Those two losses are the only two times USC has not advanced to the round of 16 since the NCAA went to a team format in 1977 … the Bulldogs have had an 8 a.m. start in every first round NCAA match they have played in Athens, Ga. (1995,’96,’99).

No. 2 Stanford (20-2) vs. No. 15 Baylor (24-3) — 2 p.m.
Stanford notes: Stanford defeated Georgia Tech 4-1 to advance to the round of 16. The Cardinal have reached at least the Sweet 16 every year the NCAA has used the team format. UCLA is the only other school that can make that claim … Stanford is attempting to win its fifth consecutive NCAA Championship.

Baylor notes: Baylor advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history in beating Harvard 4-1 … last year had been the first season in which the Bears qualified for the NCAAs. They lost first round in 1998 … Baylor has been ranked as high as No. 3 this season .. the Bears were one of only three teams to win a regional they were not hosting … from a matchup perspective, the Baylor-Stanford contest offers the biggest discrepancy in tournament experience in two opposing teams. The Cardinal are 69-7 all time in the NCAA Tournament while the Bears are 2-1.

No. 7 Texas (25-4) vs. No. 10 Georgia (22-5) — 2 p.m.
Texas notes: Texas earned a spot in the Sweet 16 for the eighth consecutive year in beating Texas A&M 4-1 … the win over the Aggies was the third time in four years the Longhorns knocked Texas A&M out of the NCAAs. They now lead the all-time series between the two schools 74-5-2.

Georgia notes: The Bulldogs narrowly escaped a game Washington squad to reach the round of 16. It was the second time Georgia beat the Huskies this year … UGA trailed 3-2 in the match but clinched when Hisham Hemeda won at No. 1 7-6 in the third and Chad Carlson won at No. 3 6-4 in the third. Both victories came within seconds of each other … this is the 16th consecutive year Georgia has reached the round of 16.

No. 3 Illinois (27-3) vs. No. 16 Arizona State (16-5) — 5 p.m.
Illinois notes: The Fighting Illini beat Vanderbilt to reach the round of 16 for the second consecutive season … Illinois has been ranked as high as No. 2 this year, the highest ever ranking for a Big Ten school … they are trying to advance past the round of 16 for the first time in school history … Illinois’ 27 wins are the most for any team remaining in the NCAA field.

Arizona State: The Sun Devils defeated a talented Pepperdine squad 4-0 to book a trip to Athens, Ga. … ASU has not been this far in the NCAA Championships since 1995, when former NCAA singles champion Sargis Sargasian, now a professional ranked No. 75 in the world, played No. 1 singles and doubles for them … Arizona State has not lost an individual match in the NCAAs yet.

No. 6 Mississippi Rebels (19-5) vs. No. 17-32 Mississippi State Bulldogs (13-11) — 5 p.m.
Mississippi notes: Ole Miss advances to the Sweet 16 for the sixth consecutive year with a 4-0 defeat of South Alabama … The Rebels will be trying to conjure up the magic that carried them to the finals in 1995. In that tournament, Mississippi defeated host Georgia 4-3 in what is considered by many to be one of the most dramatic matches in NCAA Championship history … With the adoption of the new NCAA Tournament format, Mississippi will go down in history as the only non-automatic qualifying team to advance past the quarterfinals … Mississippi and Mississippi State split the two regular season matches.

Mississippi State notes: Mississippi State advanced to the round of 16 by shocking host Tennessee in the second round 4-3 … MSU has the fewest wins and most losses of any team in the Sweet 16 … Mississippi State is one of three schools with the nickname “Bulldogs” to reach the round of 16. Georgia and Fresno State are the others.
