Seven Buckeyes Medal at NCAA Regionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio –  Twenty-two Ohio State fencers competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships to vie for spots at the NCAA Championships in two weeks. Two Buckeyes – Henry Lange and Roscoe Swartz – earned gold-medal status in their respective weapons. Of the 22 Buckeyes who competed, 19 finished in the Top 10.

SABER

Sophomore Roscoe Swartz avenged his third-place finish from last year with a 2020 regional first-place finish. Swartz picked up 14 victories on the day with a staggering +45 indicator. The only bout Swartz lost on  the day was to teammate Hudson Santana, who placed seventh with a +15 indicator. Domenik Koch followed Swartz with 12 victories and a +30 indicator to place third. Stephen Chou earned eighth place.

Julieta Toledo and Sarah Merza each earned eight victories; however, Toledo’s three-touch advantage over Merza earned her second place. Merza notched her second consecutive bronze at regionals with a +22 indicator.

EPEE

Henry Lange continued his momentum following a first-place finish at the Midwest Fencing Championships two weeks ago. He earned first at regionals with 14 victories and 13 indicators ahead of the second place finisher of Notre Dame. Matthew Comes joined him on the podium with 12 victories.

Alexanne Verret topped her third-place finish from last year with a silver medal.

FOIL

Freshman Diego Cervantes claimed bronze with 11 wins and +32 indicator. Nathan Wreidt and  Leon Cao also finish in the Top 10 for the Buckeyes.

The Camilla Rivano-Gabriela Cecchini-Alexa Laskaris trio continued their season-long dominance with three Top 10 finishes for the second consecutive year.

The Buckeyes will learn their fate when NCAA Championship qualifiers are announced Tuesday afternoon. They will return to the strips for the final time this season at the 2020 NCAA Championships in Detroit, Mich., March 19-22.
