COLUMBUS, Ohio– Right-handed pitcher Nate Smith (Jr., Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after guiding the Buckeyes to a 9-0 win over Harvard in the Homestead Challenge and a 9-2 victory over Northwestern on Sunday that gave Ohio State a 3-1 series victory over the Wildcats to begin Big Ten play.
Smith pitched 14 innings and struck out 14 batters last week to get his first two wins of the season. He went seven innings and struck out six batters (all in the first three innings) while walking just one while giving up just two hits in the Buckeyes’ win over Harvard. Against Northwestern on Sunday, took a no-hitter in to the sixth inning, when he gave up a home run on the first pitch of the inning. It was the only hit he gave up in the game holding opposing batters to .048 average and fanning eight… Had a 0.64 ERA in the two games last week and now has a 1.71 ERA for the season, second best on the team behind E.J. Laratta (1.50). Laratta (Sr., Englewwod, Colo./Cherry Creek) was also a Big Ten Pitcher of the Week earlier this season (Feb. 25).
