COLUMBUS, Ohio – Natalie Spooner, a junior forward on the Ohio State women’s hockey team, was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Wednesday. This is her first honor of the season and sixth of her career. Overall, the Buckeyes have garnered seven weekly awards this season. Spooner recorded four goals and two assists in Ohio State’s sweep at St. Cloud State Jan. 28-29 in St. Cloud, Minn. The junior forward recorded her third-career hat trick as well as an assist in game one to help the Buckeyes win, 6-1. In the second game, Spooner continued her offensive momentum, tallying a goal and an assist as Ohio State claimed the sweep with a 3-2 victory. The two wins over the Huskies marked the first time the Buckeyes have swept St. Cloud in a season series in program history (12 years, have met 57 times).
The native of Scarborough, Ontario, Spooner leads the Buckeyes with 14 multi-point games and has a team-high 24 goals in 2011. She is now only two goals away from second place on the Ohio State career goals category. Spooner also owns the Buckeye record for career game-winning goals with 12 and stands sixth in career points with 109.
The Buckeyes host eighth-ranked North Dakota this weekend in a WCHA series Feb. 4-5. Games begin at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink. Admission, as always, is free.
