COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three members of the No. 10-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team have earned preseason all-Big Ten Conference honors, the league announced Monday. In addition, the 2020-21 Big Ten preseason poll was announced with Ohio State and Notre Dame tied for third behind Minnesota and Michigan, respectively.
Individual preseason honorees for the Scarlet and Gray include senior goalie Tommy Nappier (St. Louis, Mo.), junior forward Quinn Preston (Trenton, Mich.) and junior forward Gustaf Westlund (Stockholm, Sweden).
Nappier, the 2019 Big Ten goalie of the year and Mike Richter Award semifinalist, was named to the second preseason team. The 6-3, 220-pounder was the 2020 team MVP as Ohio State went 20-11-5, swept Wisconsin in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament and was on its way to a school-record fourth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nappier, who was second in the Big Ten with a 2.04 goals against average last season, is Ohio State’s career leader in GAA (2.04) and save percentage (.932).
Preston and Westlund were each named honorable mention all-Big Ten. The pair were tied for third on the Ohio State team last year with 26 points, respectively, trailing only current Philadelphia Flyer Tanner Laczynski (34 points) and Carson Meyer (31 points), now with the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL.
Preston is coming off a sophomore campaign where he ranked fourth in the Big Ten with 15 goals scored and also contributed 11 assists for 26 total points. The 5-11, 182-pounder scored in nine of the team’s final 12 games last season and enters 2020-21 with 40 career points off 20 goals and 20 assists.
Westlund was tied for first in the league, and was Top 10 nationally, with four game-winning goals last year among his 12 tallies. He also contributed 14 assists for 26 total points. The 6-0, 175-pounder had a 5-14-19 line as a freshman and enters his third season with the Buckeyes with 45 career points off 17 goals and 28 assists.
The Big Ten Conference released the first half of its 2020-21 men’s hockey schedule last Thursday. Ohio State will open the season on the road against Minnesota Nov. 23-24.
Attendance at hockey games this year is still being evaluated. The health and safety of the student-athletes, spectators and event staff is the top priority of the university and the Department of Athletics and additional details regarding fan attendance will be communicated in the near future.
