Nappier Backstopping the Buckeyes

Buckeye Tommy Nappier, the 2019 Big Ten Goalie of the Year, has carried his outstanding play into the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

“I’m becoming more confident, but I have confidence in my team too,” Nappier native, said before the Buckeyes’ series at Notre Dame. “I’m just trying to go out there and do the same thing every game and keep the puck out of the net.”

Nappier and the Buckeyes have limited opponents to two or fewer goals in nine of 10 games this season, with Nappier starting all 10. He is 10th in the NCAA with a 1.79 goals-against average and ranks 11th with a .935 save percentage, while the squad is sixth in scoring defense (1.80 goals allowed per game).

A St. Louis, Mo., native, Nappier has earned Big Ten Star of the Week accolades twice through the first five weeks of the year. He was named the league’s first star of the week after backstopping the squad to the Ice Breaker Tournament title, including a career-high 44 saves, and earned second star accolades after allowing just three goals in a sweep of Michigan. He is a six-time Big Ten Star of the Week honoree in his career.

As a Buckeye, Nappier has a 1.77 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in 36 games (with 33 starts), posting a 22-7-4 record with five shutouts. He played four games as a rookie and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. As a sophomore last season, Nappier was a First Team All-B1G choice and a Mike Richter Award semifinalist. He posted a program-record 1.86 goals-against average in 2018-19, with his season save percentage of .934 ranking second all-time, and was 12-4-3. This year is the first time he has started both games of a weekend series for the Scarlet and Gray.
