2022-23


Athletics
My Gameday: Spring Commencement

Quinn Kuntz is a goaltender on the Women’s Ice Hockey Team and contributed to the team’s National Championship victory at the end of the 2021-2022 season. She maintained stellar grades throughout her career and was awarded with Academic All-Big Ten honors in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Miriam Perez was on the Women’s Gymnastics Team from 2019-2022. She mainly competed on Beam and Floor while also maintaining grades that resulted in her 2 Academic All-Big Ten honors after the end of the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Softball
My Gameday: Mariah Rodriguez

Mariah Rodriguez is a senior on the Ohio State softball team and she took us along on her weekend during the team’s first home series of the season against Michigan.

On Monday, during the final game of the historic series, Mariah Rodriguez’s triple in the bottom of the second inning scored teammate Kaitlyn Farley to put the Buckeyes ahead 4-0. With a final score of 8-7 in that game, the Buckeyes took the series against the Wolverines. It was the first time they had done so in 33 years, and Mariah’s hot bat played no small part in making history.

Baseball
My Gameday: Marcus Ernst

Marcus Ernst is a senior on the Buckeye baseball team and took us along with him during the weekend the Buckeyes were competing in Arizona.

Marcus Ernst had the first hit of the day for the Buckeyes, singling through the left side in the top of the first.  Ernst and Kaczmar had a team-best two hits each and Ernst and Kaiser led OSU in RBIs with two apiece. Ernst also currently leads the team in home runs with six on the season so far.

Women's Swim & Dive
My Gameday: Aislinn Walsh

Aislinn Walsh is a senior on the Buckeye women’s swim and dive team and took us along with her during the weekend the Buckeyes were competing in the Big Ten Championships. The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team won its fourth consecutive Big Ten Conference championship Saturday, February 18.

Aislinn Walsh won the 200 Butterfly final helping extended Ohio State’s lead at the Big Ten championships to 136 points with a final of 1:58.24.

Men's Ice Hockey
My Gameday: Tate Singleton

Tate Singleton is a senior on the Buckeye men’s hockey team. Ohio State took on TTUN in First Energy Stadium in Cleveland February 18 in front of a record breaking crowd of 45,523. The No. 10/9 Buckeyes defeated No. 4 Michigan, 4-2, never trailing in the game. Check out Tate’s first person view of practice and gameday.

Women's Volleyball
My Gameday: Kylie Murr and Gabby Gonzales

Gabby Gonzales and Kylie Murr are Seniors on the Buckeye Women’s Volleyball team. The Buckeyes are also Digital Media interns for the Athletic Department and took us along with them as they covered the Wrestling match against Penn State at their home court, Covelli, on Friday, February 3.

Mitchell Pehlke: My Gameday

Mitchell Pehlke is a senior on the Ohio State Men’s Lacrosse team. The Leesburg, Virginia native is a sport industry major who has been both an OSU Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

He has his own YouTube page and took us along with him as he attended the top 10 Women’s Basketball matchup between the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes on January 23.

My Gameday: Quinn Kuntz

Quinn Kuntz is a Senior on the Buckeye Women’s Ice Hockey team. The No. 1 ranked Buckeyes played Minnesota State at home and swept the Mavericks 6-2 Friday, Jan. 27 and 4-2 Saturday, Jan. 28.

My Gameday: Riley Brennen

Riley Brennen is a Junior at Ohio State studying Sport Industry and minoring in Media and Society. The digital media intern traveled with the Swimming and Dive team on January 21 to Ann Arbor, Michigan as the Buckeyes took on TTUN.

Women's Gymnastics
My Gameday: Hannah Oliveros

Hannah Oliveros is a junior on the Buckeye Women’s Gymnastics team. The No. 10 ranked Buckeyes hit the road for the first time this season on Monday, traveling to Georgia to compete against the No. 20 Bulldogs, Fisk and Rutgers. They were victorious earning a team score of 196.250 to win Georgia quad meet.

Men's Ice Hockey
My Gameday: Carson Meyer

Carson Meyer is a senior forward and a leader for Buckeye Men’s Hockey. On Feb. 29, he celebrated senior night by greeting his family on the ice, and he even watched his sister sing the National Anthem before hitting the ice against Wisconsin.

Fencing
My Gameday: Sarah Merza

On February 1st, The Ohio State University fencing team traveled to Chicago for the Northwestern University Duals. Senior Captain, Sarah Merza is sharing with Buckeye Nation her weekend competing with the team. Sarah is a apart of the sabre unit and led women’s sabre unit in points at OSU Duals both her freshman and sophomore year. The fencing team closed the regular season with a 16-5 record at the Northwestern Duals. Sarah will continue to lead the team into post season competitions.

Women's Ice Hockey
My Gameday: Rebecca Freiburger

On Jan 17th senior Women’s Ice Hockey forward, Rebecca Freiburger, was able to compete on the ice in her home state of Minnesota. Helping the Buckeyes dominate against the Gophers in a 4-1 game, she scored one goal and had one assist. Rebecca has made an appearance in every game throughout her career as a Buckeye so far and continues to be an influential player on the ice.

My Gameday: Skylar Kaplan

Digital media intern Skylar Kaplan has been working with the Ohio State athletic department for two years and continues to grow her talent and creativity.

Through Instagram’s “Student Section contest,” Skylar won a trip to the LSU vs Clemson College Football Playoff National Championship game in New Orleans.

My Fiesta Bowl: Rob Jech

Rob Jech works at the Office of Student Life at The Ohio State University. If you’ve been in The Shoe this football season, you may have seen Rob on the sidelines as he works home games for the Big Ten Conference as the liaison for the officiating crew. In that role, he is responsible for coaches-refs introductions, media time outs and official replay reviews.

As a part of his role with Student Life, Rob had the opportunity to travel to the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. What made it extra special was that he shared the experience with his dad, Tom.

My Gameday: Matt Andrews

Imagine working three different Ohio State sporting events in the span of thirty hours with one event being out-of-state. That’s how 97.1 The Fan’s Matt Andrews spent his whirlwind December 7-8 weekend.

  • Noon Saturday: men’s basketball vs. Penn State at The Schott
  • 8 p.m. Saturday: football vs. Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship in Indy
  • 2 p.m. Sunday: women’s basketball vs. Radford back at The Schott

My Gameday: VFA-106 Flyover

As the National Anthem concluded before Saturday’s military appreciation game versus Maryland, fans were treated with a pregame flyover from the United States Navy. The pregame flyover from Norfolk, Va. flying Navy F-18 Super Hornets are members of VFA-106, the United States Navy’s premier F-18 Fleet Replacement Squadron.

Women's Volleyball
My Gameday: Mia Grunze

Mia Grunze is a sophomore on the women’s volleyball team. A 2018 scholar-athlete, Grunze played in 18 matches her freshman season including 12 starts. The Buckeyes opened the season in the brand new Covelli Center and Grunze took us through the team’s first match day in the beautiful new building.

My Summer Road Trip: Morgan Lowe

Morgan Lowe is a sophomore on the women’s gymnastics team, and has competed in every meet in both her seasons so far.

This summer, Lowe had the opportunity to study abroad in Australia. She learned about the country, different ecosystems, sustainability and the human impacts on the environment. See more about her trip studying abroad and exploring Australia below.

Women's Soccer
My Road Trip: Izzy Rodriquez

Izzy Rodriguez is a senior defender for the Buckeye women’s soccer team, and started all 21 matches her freshman year and 18 her sophomore year. She was also a member of the United States U-20 team that appeared in the U-20 Women’s World Cup in France.

Rodriguez recently took a service trip to Costa Rica along with other selected Ohio State student-athletes. Take a look at her amazing experience on her service trip.

My Summer Road Trip: Madison Smeathers

Madison Smeathers is a senior middle blocker for the Buckeye Women’s Volleyball team who has made appearances in over 70 matches throughout her tenure as a Buckeye. Smeathers recently took a trip to Peru and Brazil with the entire women’s volleyball team. Take a look at her amazing experience on the South American Tour.

My Summer Road Trip: Derrick Malone

Derrick Malone is a senior tight end in his fifth year with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Malone is a native of Dayton, Ohio and in May he went on a mission trip to Kunming, Yunnan where he and a few of his teammates assisted in hosting a youth football camp in efforts to spread the game of football.
