COLUMBUS, Ohio The 15th-ranked Ohio State (7-7 overall, 4-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-22, 30-25, 29-31, 31-29) decision to 10th-ranked Lewis (11-3, 3-1) Saturday night in St. John Arena. Ohio State’s Ted Schoenfeldt produced a career-high 26 points in the match with 25 kills and two assist blocks. Flyer Drew Pickering posted a team-high 22.5 points for Lewis with 21 kills and three assist blocks.

Tied at three in the first game, Lewis began a four-point run with a Gustavo Cintron kill. An ace serve by Mike Iandolo, a Nathan Klaas kill and a Klaas-Alex Vigansky-Cintron block opened a 7-3 Flyer lead. Lewis controlled the game and held a 25-22 lead when the Flyers scored the final five points to win the game, 30-22. The run began with an OSU error and an Aaron Flick ace serve. A Pickering kill, a Pickering -Vigansky block and an OSU error closed out the game. Lewis hit .500 for the game to .105 for Ohio State.

Game two saw Lewis overcome a 3-2 Buckeye lead with six consecutive points to open an 8-3 lead. Trailing, 21-18, a Buckeye block from Schoenfeldt, Kevin Heine and Shawn Sangrey, an Albertson-Schoenfeldt block and a Flyer error tied the game at 21. An OSU error, a Klaas kill and a Vigansky-Klaas block opened a 24-21 Flyer lead. At 26-22, a Schoenfeldt kill and a John Klanac solo block cut the margin to two at 26-24. Two OSU errors and a Billy Sahagian block set game point at 29-24. A Flyer error stopped the first game point but a Sahagian kill closed out the game, 30-25, for Lewis to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead in the match. The Flyers hit .146 for the game to .061 for Ohio State.

Ohio State held a 4-3 lead in game three before a six-point run by the Flyers gave them a 9-5 lead. The run included two kills each from Pickering and Cintron, a Klaas kill and an OSU error. Trailing, 27-23, two kills from Schoenfeldt and one from Klein cut the Flyer lead to one at 27-26. A Buckeye error made it 28-26. An Albertson kill and a Flyer error tied the game at 28. An OSU error made it 29-28 Lewis with the Flyers serving match point. A Schoenfeldt kill stopped the point to tie the game at 29. A Klanac-Albertson block gave Ohio State a 30-29 lead, serving game point. Schoenfeldt, with a kill, won the game, 31-29, to cut the Lewis lead in the match to 2-1. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to .273 for the Flyers.

Game four featured 19 ties and five lead changes. Tied at nine, an Iandolo kill gave Lewis a 10-9 lead. A Schoenfeldt kill tied the game at ten. A Klein kill and a Flyer error opened a 12-10 Buckeye lead. Two OSU errors and kills from Vigansky and Pickering gave Lewis a 14-12 lead. OSU tied the game at 14 with two kills from Schoenfledt. Tied at 17, a Pickering kill and an OSU error gave the Flyers a 19-17 lead. At 24-22, a Flyer error and a kill from Albertson tied the game at 24. Tied at 28, a Pickering kill made it 29-28 with the Flyers serving match point. A Schoenfeldt kill stopped the match point to tie the game at 29. A Klaas kill made it 30-29 for the Flyers’ third match point. Lewis won the game, 31-29 with a Vigansky block to win the match, 3-1. The Flyers hit .342 for the game to .297 for Ohio State.

Lewis hit .392 for the match to .209 for Ohio State. The Flyers had a 70-65 advantage in kills and a 64-62 edge in assists. Iandolo posted a match-high 60 assists for Lewis with Kehoe recording 56 for the Buckeyes. The Flyers had a 3-2 edge in ace serves while the Buckeyes gave up 13 service errors to eight for the Flyers. Defensively, Ohio State edged Lewis in digs, 46-45. OSU’s Mike Berzins posted a match-high 15 digs in the contest. At the net, the Flyers had a 17-11.5 advantage in team blocks. Flyer Vigansky collected a match-high eight total blocks with a solo and seven assists.

Next week Ohio State will play a 7 p.m. Wednesday match at Juniata.
