COLUMBUS, Ohio The 15th-ranked Ohio State (6-6 overall, 3-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (30-21, 30-18, 30-24) victory over Quincy (7-13, 0-2) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Robbie Klein posted a match-high 19 points in the contest with a 16 kills and three ace serves. Buckeye John Klanac added 13.5 points with 10 kills, two ace serves, a solo block and an assist block. Ben Schulze had a team-high 11 points for Quincy with 10 kills and an ace serve. Peter Coley added 10 points for the Hawks with eight kills and two ace serves.

A Schulze kill opened game one to give Quincy a 1-0 lead. Ohio State tied the game with a Ted Schoenfeldt kill. The Buckeyes, with an ace serve from Klein and a Ben Spurlock kill, took a 3-1 lead. Errors by both teams and a Greg Gant kill cut the margin to one at 4-3. A Spurlock kill and ace serve made it 6-3. An OSU error cut the lead to two at 6-4. Ohio State scored the next five points starting with two Klanac kills. A kill from Klein made it 9-4. An ace serve from Steven Kehoe and a Klanac kill made it 11-4. The Buckeyes held the lead and reached game point at 29-18 with a Klanac solo block. Two Gant kills and a Coley ace serve stopped three game points to make the score, 29-21. A Quincy error ended the game at 30-21 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .353 for the game to .312 for the Hawks.

A Klein kill and an OSU error tied game two at 1-1. Another Klein kill and a Hawk error gave OSU a 3-1 lead. Kills from Gant and Schoenfeldt moved the score to 4-2, OSU. Two ace serves from Klein expanded the lead to 6-2. Kills from Schulze and Klein made it 7-3 Buckeyes. Schulze, with a kill, cut the margin to three at 7-4. Buckeye kills from Klanac and Kehoe and three Quincy errors expanded the lead to eight at 12-4. The Buckeyes built up the lead to reach game point at 29-18 off a Hawk error. Ohio State won the game, 30-18, with a Klanac kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .478 in the game to -.083 for Quincy.

Tied at four in game three, two Quincy errors and a Klein kill gave Ohio State a 7-4 lead. A kill and ace serve from Coley cut the lead to 7-6. A Hawk error and a Robbie Coughlin kill made it 8-7. A Buckeye error tied the game at eight and a Tanner Wright ace serve gave Quincy a 9-8 lead. Klein tied the game at nine with a kill. A Schulze kill and a Coughlin ace serve gave the Hawks an 11-9 lead. A Quincy error followed by two Coley kills made it 13-10, Hawks. A Klanac kill made it 13-11. At 17-15, Buckeye kills from Klanac and Kehoe tied the game at 17. At 20-all, two Hawk errors and a Shawn Sangrey kill gave Ohio State a 23-20 lead. At 25-22, a Buckeye error cut the margin to 25-23. Two kills from Klanac and one from Klein expanded the lead to five at 28-23. A Spurlock ace serve set match point at 29-23. An OSU error stopped the match point at 29-24. Ohio State closed out the game at 30-24 off a Quincy error to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .429 for the game to .161 for the Hawks.

For the match, Ohio State hit .410 to .149 for Quincy. The Buckeyes had a 41-32 advantage in kills and a 35-30 margin in assists. OSU’s Kehoe recorded a match-high 33 assists with Ivan Shirokov collecting 27 for Quincy. The Buckeyes had a 10-7 edge in ace serves in the contest. OSU’s Klein produced a match-high three ace serves. He now has 110 for his career and has moved to second on the Ohio State career aces list. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 31-22 advantage in digs for the match. Buckeye Brian Kues collected a match-high nine digs. At the net, Ohio State edged Quincy in team blocks, 3-2. OSU’s Kevin Heine (two assist blocks), Klanac (one solo, one assist) and Hawk Coughlin (two assists) shared match high honors with two total blocks each.

Ohio State continues at home next week with MIVA conference play against Loyola-Chicago Friday and No. 12 Lewis Saturday in 7 p.m. matches in St. John Arena.
