COLUMBUS, OhioThe 14th-ranked OhioState (0-4) men’s volleyball team fell, 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 36-34) to fourth-ranked Stanford (4-1) Friday in St. John Arena. Buckeye Kevin Heine posted a team-high 17.5 points with 14 kills, a solo block and five assist blocks. Robbie Klein contributed 14 points and Shawn Sangrey 10. Klein had 13 kills and two assist blocks while Sangrey had eight kills, an ace serve and two assist blocks. Leading the Cardinal was Evan Romero with a match-high 20 points. He contributed 17 kills, two ace serve and two assist blocks. Spencer McLachlin added 15.5 points and Brad Lawson 10. McLachlin had 14 kills, an ace serve and one assist block while Lawson had nine kills, one ace serve and two assist blocks.
With Ohio State leading, 7-6, in game one off a Ted Schoenfeldt kill, Stanford used two kills from McLachlin and two blocks from Romero and Garrett Werner to take a 10-7 lead. OSU trailed, 14-12 before kills from Sangrey and Heine tied the game at 14. After four ties moved the score to 19-all. A Schoenfeldt kill gave OhioState a 20-19 lead. A McLachlin kill tied the game at 20. Stanford took a 21-20 lead with a McLachlin kill and with a Lawson kill took a 22-20 lead. At 23-21 a John Albertson kill and a Cardinal error tied the game at 23. OhioState took a 24-23 lead with a Steven Kehoe-Heine block. Lawson tied the game at 24 with a kill. At 27-all, an OSU error and a Klein kill made it 28-28. The Cardinal reached game point at 29-28 with a Romero kill. A Buckeye error ended the game at 30-28 for Stanford. The Cardinal hit .341 for the game to .400 for OhioState.
Tied at nine in game two, a Klein kill and a Stanford error gave Ohio State an 11-9 lead. A Buckeye error and a Romero kill tied the game at 11. An OSU error and a Romero kill opened a 13-11 Cardinal lead. At 24-21, A Klein kill and a Stanford error cut the Cardinal lead to one at 24-23. Two McLachlin kill and two Buckeye errors opened up a 28-23 Stanford lead. An Albertson kill cut the margin to 28-24. Stanford reached game point at 29-24 with a Kawika Shoji kill. Two Heine kills stopped two game points to cut the margin to three at 29-26. The Cardinal took a 2-0 lead in the match with a McLachlin kill, winning the game, 30-26. The Cardinal hit .359 for the game to .229 for OhioState.
Game three saw the Buckeyes take an 11-9 lead with a Ben Spurlock kill. Stanford ran off the next five points starting with a Romero kill and a Lawson-Brandon Williams block to tie the game at 11. Two Romero ace serves and a Kawika Shoji kill gave Stanford a 14-11 lead. Trailing 17-14, the Buckeyes used two Stanford errors and a triple block by Jason Tobkin, Heine and Klein to tie the game at 17. Two OSU errors and a Romero kill gave the Cardinal a 20-17 lead. At 26-23, a Heine kill and a Cardinal error made it 26-25. An OSU error put the lead at two points, 27-25. A Heine kill and a Tobkin-Spurlock block tied the game at 27. A Lawson kill gave Stanford a 28-27 lead. Back-to-back kills from Spurlock tied the game at 28 and game OhioState a 29-28 lead serving game point. Lawson tied the game at 29 with a kill. Klein, with a kill, gave OSU a 30-29 lead and serving a second game point. An OSU service error tied the game at 30. Stanford, with an ace serve, gave Stanford a 31-30 lead, serving match point. OSU tied the game at 31 with a Kehoe-Spurlock-Sangrey block. A McLachlin kill made it 32-31 Cardinal and serving their second match point. A Heine kill stopped the point, tying the game at 32. A block by Heine gave OhioState a 33-32 lead, serving their third game point. A Cardinal block by Gus Ellis and Kawika Shoji tied the game at 33. A Cardinal service error gave OhioState a 34-33 lead, serving their fourth game point. A Romero kill tied the game at 34. Stanford took a 35-34 lead off a Buckeye error had their third match point. The Cardinal ended the game, 36-34, with an Ellis-Lawson block giving Stanford a 3-0 win in the match. The Cardinal hit .196 in the game to .244 for OhioState.
In the match, Stanford hit .294 to .287 for OhioState. The Cardinal had a 57-53 advantage in kills and a 5-1 margin in ace serves. Romero posted a match-high two aces in the match. Stanford gave up 13 service errors to 12 for the Buckeyes. OSU posted 52 assists to 51 for the Cardinal. Kehoe collected a match-high 48 assists while Kawika Shoji had 46 for the Cardinal. Defensively, OhioState had a 41-38 edge in digs. OSU’s Mik Berzins posted a match-high 13 digs in the contest. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 10-6 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Heine collected a match-high six blocks with a solo and five assists.
OhioState completes a two-match home stand at 2 p.m. Sunday when they host fourth-ranked (Division III) Juniata (0-0) in St. John Arena.
