COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s volleyball team will host Lewis and Ball State in exhibition matches Saturday in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes will open play at 1 p.m. against Lewis. Ball State plays Lewis at 4 p.m. with Ohio State facing Ball State in the final match at 7 p.m. Admission is free to all three matches.
The Buckeyes, coached by Pete Hanson, posted a 20-8 overall record last season and finished 11-1 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA), winning a second-consecutive league championship. Ohio State won the MIVA tournament to advance to the NCAA Championship semifinals when it lost to eventual NCAA Champion Penn State, 3-0.
The Flyers, coached by Dan Friend, had a 21-10 overall record last season. Lewis was 7-5 in the MIVA, finishing in a third-place tie. The Flyers advanced to the semifinals of the MIVA tournament, losing to Ball State, 3-1.
The Cardinals, coached by Joel Walton, had a 21-10 overall record in 2008. Ball State was 10-2 in the MIVA, finishing in second place. The Cardinals advanced to the MIVA tournament championship match, falling, 3-0, to Ohio State.
HEAD COACH PETE HANSON
Pete Hanson is in his 25th season at Ohio State. He has a 472-262 record with the Buckeyes and has 11 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championships, including 2008. Named the MIVA Coach of the Year eight times, including 2007, he was the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2000 when OSU was the NCAA national championship runner-up. Hanson was also the 1998 Volleyball Magazine Coach of the Year. His teams have advanced to the NCAA championships seven times including back-to-back appearances in 2000 (runner-up) and 2001 (semifinalist).
UPCOMING OHIO STATE MATCHES
Ohio State returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2 against Waterloo. The squads play again at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 3. Both matches will be played in St. John Arena and admission is free. The Buckeyes then travel to Honolulu, Hawaii to play in the Outrigger Tournament. Ohio State faces host Hawaii at 12 p.m. ET, Thursday, Jan. 8. The Buckeyes next face Penn State at 9 p.m. ET, Friday, Jan. 9 and close out play against Southern California at 9 p.m. ET, Saturday, Jan. 10.
