COLUMBUS, Ohio The 10th-ranked and fourth-seeded Ohio State (16-11 overall) men’s volleyball team ended the season with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-26) loss to top-ranked and No. 1 seed UC Irvine in the NCAA National semifinals in Smith Fieldhouse on the campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah Thursday. OSU’s Robbie Klein posted a team-high 13 points for the Buckeyes with 13 kills (.375) and Ted Schoenfeldt added 9.5 points with nine kills and an assist block. UC Irvine’s Carson Clark recorded a match-high 14 points with 12 kills and two ace serves. Taylor Wilson added 12 points with 11 kills and one ace serve.
In game one that saw 11 ties, a Klein kill tied the game for the final time at 16. Irvine kills from Ryan Ammerman and Clark gave the Anteaters an 18-16 lead. The Buckeyes cut the lead to one at 20-19 with a Schoenfeldt kill and at 21-20 with a Ben Spurlock kill. An UC Irvine kill from Jordan Dufault and a Jon Steller ace serve gave the Anteaters a 23-20 lead. UC Irvine expanded the lead to five at 26-21 with a Clark kill. A Klein kill cut the margin to four at 28-24. Clark, with a kill, set game point at 29-24. An Anteater error stopped the game point at 29-25. UC Irvine won the game, 30-25, off an OSU error to give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead in the match. UC Irvine hit .333 for the game to .381 for Ohio State.
Game two saw Ohio State break a 5-5 tie with a Steven Kehoe solo block. A kill from Spurlock, a John Klanac ace serve and a Schoenfeldt kill opened a 9-5 Buckeye lead. Two OSU errors made it 9-7. After a Schoenfeldt kill made it 10-7, an OSU error, an Ammerman block and an Ammerman-Austin D’Amore block tied the game at 10. Tied at 12, a Buckeye error and a Dufault-Kevin Wynne block gave UC Irvine a 14-12 lead. The Anteaters opened a six-point lead at 28-22 with a D’Amore kill. Kills from Klein, Kevin Heine and Klanac made it a three-point game at 28-25. A Dufault kill set game point at 29-25. A Buckeye error ended the game, 30-25, to give UC Irvine a 2-0 lead in the match. The Anteaters hit .353 for the game to .205 for the Buckeyes.
A Klein kill and an Anteater error gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead to start game three. At 4-2, OSU, A Wynne kill and a Buckeye error tied the game at four. At 8-8, an OSU error and a Taylor Wilson ace serve gave UC Irvine a 10-8 lead. OSU, with a Klein kill and an Anteater error tied the game at ten. After five more ties made the score 16-16, a kill from Ammerman and one from Clark gave UC Irvine an 18-16 lead. At 23-21, two Clark kills and an OSU error gave UC Irvine a 26-21 lead. Trailing 28-23, a Klein kill cut the margin to four at 28-24. A kill from Clark set match point at 29-24. An Anteater error stopped the match point at 29-25. UC Irvine won the game at 30-25 off a Buckeye error to win the match, 3-0. UC Irvine hit .243 for the game to .212 for Ohio State.
For the match, UC Irvine hit .306 to .247 for the Buckeyes. The Anteaters had a 48-40 advantage in kills and a 47-37 margin in assists. Ammerman posted a match-high 45 assists for UC Irvine while OSU’s Kehoe recorded 35. The Anteaters had a five-to-one edge in ace serves with Clark posting a match-high two. OSU gave up 19 service errors to 17 for UC Irvine. Defensively, the Anteaters had a 27-24 margin in digs. OSU’s Mik Berzins and UC Irvine’s Brent Asuka each recorded a match-high 10 digs in the contest. At the net, Ohio State had a five-to-four edge in team blocks. OSU’s Heine posted a match-high three assist blocks for the Buckeyes.
