COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s tennis team had eight members advance to the second round of the singles main draw Friday at the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Men’s Midwest Regional Championship. Three pairs of Buckeyes also won their first round match in the doubles main draw. The event is taking place at the Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The eight representing the Scarlet and Gray in the Round of 32 are the most of any team in the singles draw. On the day, Ohio State went 11-2 in both main draw singles and doubles competition.

Blaz Rola, a sophomore and the No. 1 overall seed, easily won his opening match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 vs. Alex Robles of Wisconsin. No. 2 seed Chase Buchanan beat Michigan’s Barrett Franks 6-1, 6-4 in his first round match to advance. Rola is 2-1 so far in the fall, while Buchanan is 3-1.

Other seeded Buckeyes advancing to the second round include fifth-seed Devin McCarthy, No. 6 seed Peter Kobelt and eighth-seed Ille Van Engelen. McCarthy defeated Notre Dame’s Michael Moore 6-4, 7-6, Kobelt won 7-5, 6-2 against Alex Pasareanu of Northwestern and Van Engelen handed Aaron Pfister a 6-2, 7-5 defeat.

Hunter Callahan defeated Illinois State’s Toomas Manner 6-3, 6-2 and new Buckeye Connor Smith dealt Petr Satral of Wisconsin a straight set 6-1, 6-1 loss. Kevin Metka beat Michigan State’s Austin Brooks 6-3, 6-3 to round out the field of Buckeyes that moved on to the Round of 32.

Two Buckeyes came up just short in the first round. Nelson Vick fell 6-4, 7-6 to Niall Fitzgerald of Notre Dame and Steven Williams lost a hard fought 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 contest to DePaul’s George Chanturia. Williams downed Wisconsin’s Craig Cox 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 earlier in the day in qualifying action to earn the right to compete in the main draw.

In doubles, Williams and Metka picked up their first win as a tandem, defeating Zeyad Montasser and Pablo Olivarez of Western Michigan 8-5. Vick and Callahan also were victorious with an 8-2 triumph vs. Skip Span and Jacob Wilson of Illinois State. McCarthy and Van Engelen also paired up and left the court with an 8-5 victory against Dan Mamalat and Otavio Perim to give Ohio State a perfect 3-0 mark in doubles.

Buchanan and Kobelt, the top-seed, as well as Rola and Smith, the No. 2 seed, both earned byes in the first round and will compete Saturday.

The second round of main draw singles will begin at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, with the third round starting around noon. The second and third rounds of the doubles draw will also take place Saturday following the singles draw. Round two will begin around 3:30 p.m., with the third round commencing at 6:15 p.m. All main draw matches will take place at the Varsity Tennis Center. Consolation matches will occur at Jesse Owens West and will begin at 9 a.m.
