Men’s Singles Draw
(9-16) Steven Moneke (Ohio State) vs. Sanam Singh (Virginia) 1 p.m. ET
COLUMBUS, Ohio Senior tri-captain Steven Moneke, a member of the national runners-up Ohio State men’s tennis team, moved on to the semifinals of the 2009 NCAA Singles Championship after downing fifth-seed Bruno Agostinelli of Kentucky 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, Saturday in a quarterfinal match in College Station, Texas, at Texas A&M’s George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Moneke becomes just the second Buckeye in program history to advance to the semifinals of the singles championship after Ernie Fernandez (1979-82) advanced to the semifinals at the 1980 NCAA Singles Championship.

“I like these courts a lot and I thought I played a good match today,” Moneke said. “I’ve played him before and I felt confident going into the third set where I was able to break it open. It’s been great this season and I’ve played consistently for most of the year. It’s an honor to be the second person to make it to the semifinals for Ohio State and hopefully I can keep it going.”
The ninth-ranked Moneke, a native of Alten-Buseck, Germany, will take on No. 26th-ranked Sanam Singh of Virginia in the semifinals at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. Moneke, who was named to the 2009 Men’s NCAA Tennis Championship All-Tournament Team Tuesday at No. 2 singles,  is now 44-4 overall (team-high) and 22-2 in NCAA play, winning his last 21 matches this season. A two-time ITA All-American (’07 and ’08), Moneke needs one singles victory to tie the program’s all-time single season wins record of 45 triumphs set by former Buckeye Roger Smith (1983-1986) during the 1986 campaign.
Moneke, who will look to become the first student-athlete in program history to advance to the finals of the championship, has never faced senior Singh (42 victories) in his four-year Buckeye career. Singh defeated top-seed Arnau Brugues of Tulsa 6-2, 6-4, in his quarterfinal match Saturday to move on in the championship.
