Men’s Singles Draw

COLUMBUS, Ohio Senior tri-captain Steven Moneke, a member of the national runners-up Ohio State men’s tennis team, advanced to his third-career quarterfinal appearance after defeating 36th-ranked Jay Weinacker in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, Friday at the 2009 NCAA Singles Championship in College Station, Texas, at Texas A&M’s George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Moneke, a native of Alten-Buseck, Germany, will face fifth-seed Bruno Agostinelli of Kentucky in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. ET Saturday.

The ninth-ranked Moneke, who was named to the 2009 Men’s NCAA Tennis Championship All-Tournament Team Tuesday at No. 2 singles, is now 43-4 overall (team-high) and 21-2 in NCAA play. Moneke, a two-time ITA All-American (’07 and ’08), is 1-2 all-time against the sixth-ranked Agostinelli, but defeated the 2009 Mr. Wildcat and the K-Association Male Athlete of the Year last season 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Singles Championship in Tulsa, Okla. Moneke now owns a program-best 144 career singles wins in his four-year career at Ohio State.

In doubles, one Buckeye duo fell in the second round of the doubles championships. Fourteenth-ranked junior Justin Kronauge and Moneke dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to No. 8 Omar Altmann and Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine. Kronauge and Moneke finish the 2009 campaign with a 13-4 overall record, winning nine of their last 12 matches. Moneke ends his four-year Buckeye career in doubles with 100 wins, which is fifth on the program’s all-time career wins list.
