Moneke moves to fourth on all-time career singles wins list

COLUMBUS, Ohio As part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the No. 1 Ohio State men’s tennis team defeated No. 64 Stetson, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in the first match of the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championships Qualifier at The Ohio State University Varsity Tennis Center.

The Buckeyes (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten) will now face the winner of the second match between No. 30 Virginia Tech and No. 41 New Mexico Sunday to compete for an invitation to the field of 16 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 13-16, in Chicago.

Ohio State is now 1-0 all-time against Stetson and improved its home winning streak to 76-consecutive matches, which dates back to the 2003 season.

No. 6 Justin Kronauge clinched the victory for the Scarlet and Gray with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Stetson’s Mark Mestan in No. 2 singles. Kronauge improved his record to 15-3 and holds the most singles wins for the Buckeyes this season.

In No. 3 singles, history was made as No. 3 Steven Moneke defeated Njal Stene 6-3, 6-1 to give the Buckeyes an early 3-0 advantage against the Hatters. Moneke is now fourth on the all-time career singles wins in program history with 114, passing Mike Massie (1983-86) with 113 career singles wins. Moneke improves to 13-3 on the season.

Sophomore Matt Allare gave the Buckeyes momentum, winning the first singles match of the day. Allare defeated Chris Swanteson 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles. Allare improves to 7-2 in singles and is the fourth Buckeye to win four-consecutive singles matches this year.

In doubles, Bryan Koniecko and Moneke swept the first doubles match in the No. 1 spot against Filip Kricka and Maksim Levanovich, 8-0. The duo is now 5-1 overall on the season.

In No. 2 doubles, Allare and Kronauge sealed the doubles point for the Buckeyes with an 8-1 victory against Mestan and Cesare Gallo. The Buckeye pair has won four-consecutive doubles matches and holds the most wins on the season with an 8-1 overall record. Allare is the first member of the squad to reach double digits in doubles wins with a 10-2 record.
