COLUMBUS, Ohio Ty Tucker, head coach of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, announced the selection of seniors Bryan Koniecko, Steven Moneke and Ty Schaub as team captains for the 2009 Buckeyes Friday. This season, the trio will look to lead Ohio State to its fourth-consecutive Big Ten title.

“I want to thank these three players for all they have given to the program,” Tucker said. “They are true Buckeyes and are always focused on being excellent teammates. It is sad to think this is their last season but I am excited to get the season under way.”

Since joining the team at the start of the 2005-06 season, Koniecko, Moneke and Schaub have helped Ohio State to 93 victories with a .939 winning percentage for the Buckeyes, including three-consecutive team appearances at the NCAA tournament quarterfinals.

Koniecko, a native of Long Island, N.Y., was pick as the preseason No. 1 singles player in the ITA NCAA Division I rankings Jan. 6 after one of the most successful autumn campaigns in the history of the program. This ranking comes after Koniecko took the crown at both the 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional.

In three seasons with the Buckeyes, Koniecko is a two-time ITA All-American (2007, ’08), three-time All-Big Ten (2006, ’07,’08), 2008 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, 2008 ITA Region IV Player to Watch and 2006 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. In 2008, Koniecko had an overall singles record of 34-9 and had an overall doubles record of 36-6.

Moneke, a native of Alten-Buseck, Germany, ranks third in singles in the ITA NCAA Division I rankings this season. Moneke, who reached the quarterfinals at the 2008 NCAA Singles Championship, is a two-time ITA All American (2007,’08), two-time All-Big Ten (2007,’08), 2007 ITA Region IV Player to Watch and took the singles crown at the 2006 ITA Midwest Regional Championships. In 2008, Moneke had an overall singles record of 38-7 and an overall doubles record of 36-6.

Schaub, a native of Lexington, Ohio, is a fifth-year senior on the team and has compiled two-consecutive winning singles seasons for the Buckeyes. In 2006-07, Schaub had an overall singles record of 5-4 and went 3-1 in dual play. Last year, Schaub had a singles record of 3-2 and extended his career singles record in dual contests to 8-7.

The Buckeyes begin the 2008-09 dual season at noon Wednesday against Butler and follow with a 5:30 matchup vs. Xavier at The Ohio State University Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
