COLUMBUS, Ohio Bryan Koniecko, a member of the No. 1-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Player of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. This is Koniecko’s second-career weekly laurel. He previously won April 2, 2008.

In their first road trip of the dual season last Friday and Sunday, the Buckeyes collected two wins against No. 22 North Carolina (7-0) and No. 21 Wake Forest (4-0), respectively. Koniecko defeated two ranked opponents en route to recording singles and doubles victories in both contests.

The Syosset, N.Y., native began the weekend by pairing with Shuhei Uzawa at No. 3 doubles to post an 8-1 win over Brennan Boyjian and Alex Rafiee of North Carolina. Koniecko then faced No. 73-ranked Clay Donato at No. 1 singles and handed the Tar Heel a 6-3, 7-5 straight-set loss.

Two days later, Koniecko and Balazs Novak teamed up against Wake Forest’s Andrew Brasseaux and Joost Vogel at No. 3 doubles and were victorious, 8-1. Again playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Koniecko had his hands full against No. 34 Cory Parr, dropping the first set, 6-3, before rebounding in the final two sets, 6-4, 6-1.

With the singles victories over Donato and Parr, Koniecko improves to 8-1 on the season against nationally-ranked opponents. He also moved into a tie for sixth place in the Ohio State career singles record book with 108 wins with assistant coach Jeremy Wurtzman. The two-time All-American has improved his 2008-09 singles record to 16-1, which includes 15-consecutive wins.
