COLUMBUS, Ohio The ninth-ranked Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team is 20th after day one of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving championships held in College Station, Texas.

“We had a good day today, but are always looking for more,” Bill Wadley, head men’s swimming coach, said. “We have high hopes for a great day tomorrow.”

The 400-yard medley relay team garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 15th-place finish. The quartet of Andrew Elliott, Felipe Travesso, Andrew Bretscher and Joel Elber finished in a time of 3:11.37.

Earning Honorable Mention All-America honors on the one-meter springboard was junior Burkley Showe. The Columbus product finished ninth with a score of 376.70 points.

Also competing for Ohio State in the preliminary round were junior swimmer George Markovic and divers Sean Moore and Ryan Jefferson. Markovic swam in the 500 freestyle and finished in a time of 4:23.18. Moore and Jefferson finished 17th and 19th, respectively, on the one-meter springboard.

Sophomores Itai Chammah and Chuck Allison also swam in the preliminary round as members of the 400 medley relay.

The Buckeyes will continue competition Friday and conclude the meet Saturday evening.
