COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 11 Ohio State men’s swimming team topped Notre Dame, 172.5-86.5, on Friday in South Bend, Ind. The Buckeyes won 11 of the 14 races and finished with nine individual race winners.

“It is very hard to compete successfully against a very good team like Notre Dame on the road,” Bill Wadley, head men’s swimming coach, said. “It is neat to have a bunch of guys on one team that are very capable of winning. They challenge each other and that speaks to how competitive our team is.”

Ohio State opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as the squad of sophomore Andrew Misich, senior Felipe Travesso, junior Andrew Bretscher and junior Joel Elber finished in 1:31.41. The Buckeyes followed with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 1000 freestyle led by junior Stefan Sigrist (9:19.56).

After the Fighting Irish took a win in the 200 freestyle, freshman Andrew Elliott led another 1-2-3-4 Ohio State finish in the 100 backstroke in a time of 50.01 followed by Misich, senior Tyler King and sophomore Phil Seleskie.

“Tonight’s win for Andrew was great,” Wadley said. “His hometown is only 10 minutes from South Bend and to win in front of his family and friends was very special.”

The Buckeyes picked up a third 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 100 breaststroke. Travesso took first in 56.22 to remain undefeated in the event for the season. Senior Matthias Sigrist earned his second win of the season in the 200 butterfly in 1:49.77.

Notre Dame’s John Lytle edged out the Buckeye sprinters in the 50 and 100 freestyles to earn his second and third wins of the meet. However, sophomore Justin Farra put the Buckeyes back on their winning ways with his second win of the season in the 200 backstroke (1:50.07).

Ohio State swept the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke with junior Daniel Malnik getting his first win of the season in 2:03.38. Also earning his first win of the year was Niksa Roki in the 200 individual medley (1:52.73).

“I’m very happy for Dan and Niksa,” Wadley said. “They both had very good swims and it is exciting for them to get their first wins of the season.”

Other individual winners for the Buckeyes were Mark Neiman in the 500 freestyle (4:34.77) and Andrew Bretscher in the 100 butterfly (50.31). Closing out the meet was the 400 freestyle relay team of Elber, Bretscher, Olson and M. Sigrist in 3:04.53.

The Buckeyes continue competition on the road and will compete at Cleveland State on Nov. 25.
