R&L Carriers helps deliver the annual fundraising event for second-consecutive year

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s soccer team hosts the defending MLS Cup Champion Columbus Crew in the Connor Senn Memorial Match delivered to you by R & L Carriers at 7 p.m. May 5 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Now in its eighth year, all proceeds from the match and silent auction benefit the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund at Ohio State, which has raised more than $142,000 to date, including a record-high $30,000 last season.

In addition to the exhibition match, the event features a silent auction that consists of a wide array of Ohio State, Columbus Crew and Major League Soccer memorabilia, including many autographed items, as well donations from a variety of Columbus businesses and organizations.

There also are a few special items, such as a jersey and soccer ball autographed by members of the U.S. National Team that defeated Mexico at Crew Stadium in March, which will be available in an online auction through Stay tuned to Ohio State’s Web site for details on the online auction that is scheduled to run May 1-8.

Tickets for the event are $5 for adults and $3 for children and groups and can be purchased online at or by calling 1-800-GO-BUCKS. The Crew is also offering an $18 package through its Web site that includes a ticket for both the Connor Senn Memorial game and the Crew vs. Kansas City Wizards game May 9.

“It is incredible to see how this game has expanded over the last eight years as a result of the hard work of the committee, led by Dave Tumbas and the members of the board of directors,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. “The quality of the evening from the soccer match, to the silent auction and the crowd support has improved far beyond our initial expectations. And this year, to have the added bonus of playing against the defending MLS champions, makes the evening even more special … we just hope they go easy on us.”
Following the game, there will be an autograph session with both Buckeye and Crew players and fans will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with the MLS Cup.

The Connor Senn Memorial Fund was established by Dr. Lance Senn, Connor’s father and a former member of the Ohio State tennis team. Connor collapsed during Ohio State’s match at Akron Sept. 26, 2001, and died that night from a congenital heart defect. A native of Granville, Ohio, Connor was a freshman walk-on defender who had earned a starting position midway through the 2001 season. The Buckeyes went on to be selected for the NCAA tournament that season.

The legacy of Connor Senn will never be forgotten at Ohio State. A plaque honoring Connor hangs outside the Buckeyes’ locker room door and Connor’s chair hangs in the locker room, which all the players on the 2001 team signed with personal messages to Connor, who was known for his tremendous work ethic, positive attitude and selfless play.

“The fundraising efforts continue to grow year after year with the help of R&L Carriers, which is in its second year as a game sponsor. Its support of this game and our fundraising goals is invaluable.” Bluem said. “Perhaps the greatest thanks need to go to the Columbus Crew, however. The Crew, led by general manager Mark McCullers, continues to be inspirational in its efforts to support the game and maintain the spirit this event embodies.”

“Play Like Connor Today” is the mantra of the Ohio State men’s soccer program and it has carried them to six trips to the NCAA tournament this decade and to the 2007 national championship game.
