COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Marike Mousset and junior Izzy Rodriguez have been named captains of the 2019 Ohio State women’s soccer team, head coach Lori Walker-Hock announced Tuesday.
“We task our team with everybody doing their share of leadership, but Marike and Izzy particularly have stood out throughout their careers and in this early part of the season,” Lori Walker-Hock, Ohio State head coach, said. “Marike has gone above and beyond, returning from last year as a captain and helping a young team into college soccer. Izzy has worked tremendously hard in the offseason and has become sharper with her leadership skills as well. They provide a very strong voice for our team and will continue to lead a very young group of Buckeyes.”
Mousset, now in her third season as a starter, has played in 52 career contests for the Buckeyes, starting 42. The native of Montreal, Quebec, tied for the team lead with three assists a season ago while scoring a goal and adding an assist as a sophomore. A 2019 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Mousset also garnered United Soccer Coaches Third Team Scholar All-North/Central Region honors last year. Mousset is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Rodriguez, from Canton, Mich., tied for the team lead with four goals and tied for third on the team with two assists a season ago. The defender who was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list earlier this month, scored four goals in conference play to tie for fifth in the Big Ten, while playing the full match 17 times, including a season-high 110 minutes vs. Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland and in the Big Ten quarterfinal vs. Nebraska. Rodriguez has played in 42 matches, including 41 starts, through her first two-plus seasons, picking up first team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore and third team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman team laurels in her opening season. A 2018 United Soccer Coaches first team All-North Region selection and 2017 TopDrawerSoccer.com second team Freshman All-American, Rodriguez has earned Big Ten weekly honors three times in her career.
The Buckeyes return to the pitch when they take on UCF at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Orlando, Fla.
