COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost on the road at No. 17 Colgate, 9-4, Tuesday night at Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y.  Ohio State (4-4) returns home for its third game in seven days when it hosts Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Senior Day. The game opens Great Western Lacrosse League play for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State opened the scoring early in the first quarter before Colgate went on a three-goal run to take a 3-1 lead with 6:22 left in the first. Ohio State held the Raiders scoreless over the next 37:34, as they tied the game with two goals in the second quarter and neither team scored in the third stanza. The Raiders scored twice in the first 2:45 of the fourth quarter to take a 5-3 lead. The Buckeyes responded 19 seconds later to cut the score to one (5-4), but could get no closer, as Colgate scored four unanswered for the 9-4 win.

Buckeye senior Brian Lalley opened the scoring off an assist from classmate Joel Dalgarno at 13:47 of the first quarter. Colgate tied the game at 9:54 on Brandon Corp’s goal and took the lead 19 seconds later when Dave Tucciarone scored at 9:35. Kevin Colleluori extended the lead to 3-1 with a goal at 6:22. Each team had five shots in the quarter.

The Buckeyes scored the only two goals of the second quarter to tie the game at 3-all. Mike Pires set up Mario Ventiquattro at 5:30 of the second and then scored an unassisted goal of his own at 3:40. Buckeye junior goalie Brandon Freeman had six saves in the quarter, as the Buckeyes kept Colgate scoreless. Colgate outshot Ohio State, 8-6, in the quarter.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter, as Colgate outshot Ohio State, 7-6. Freeman had four saves in the quarter, with Colgate’s Tim Harrington also making four stops.

In the fourth quarter, Corp forced a turnover and was able to get the groundball and score at the 13:48 mark to end Colgate’s scoreless streak at 37:34 and put the Raiders back ahead. Nick Monastero followed with a tally at 12:15. Ventiquattro scored 19 seconds later to cut the margin to one (5-4), assisted by senior Jeff Ryan. Corp scored his third of the game at 9:36 to put Colgate ahead, 6-4, and Ian Murphy tallied 34 seconds after that, extending the lead to three (7-4). Colgate scored twice in the final 61 seconds, as Colleluori scored with 1:01 remaining and Murphy ended the scoring with 23 seconds left. The shots were 9-6 in favor of Colgate in the fourth.

For the game, Colgate outshot Ohio State, 29-23. Freeman made 11 saves in all 60 minutes. Harrington had nine stops for the Raiders.

Just one penalty was called in the game, with Ohio State 0-for-1 on its EMO chance in the first quarter.
