COLUMBUS, Ohio. – Coming off a great defensive effort in the season-opener, the No. 15/14 Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0) forced 35 Boston College (1-2) turnovers and ran away with an 82-64 road victory on Sunday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Senior Rebeka Mikulasikova scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to notch her fourth-career double-double. Jacy Sheldon swiped 11 of the Buckeyes 20 steals which tied the single-game program record. Taylor Mikesell added 16 points while Sheldon had 14 points and Taylor Thierry had 10 points.

How it Happened

It was a slow start for each team in the first quarter. The Buckeyes shot just 38 percent and had six turnovers as they led just 17-16 after the first 10 minutes. Mikulasikova made both of her shots and had five points and two rebounds.

The second quarter was where the Buckeyes broke the game open. Trailing 22-21 with six minutes to go until halftime, a Mikesell three-pointer sparked a 16-0 Ohio State run. Mikesell and Rikki Harris each had five points in the run while Sheldon added four points and four steals during the spurt. Ultimately, the Buckeyes finished the final six minutes of the quarter on a 21-3 run to take full control into the locker room, leading 42-25.

The Buckeyes continued to dominate in the third, forcing 11 more turnovers and eventually ran the lead out to as many as 21 points. They made three three-pointers while Mikulasikova had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the quarter.

In the fourth, Mikulasikova had back-to-back lay-ups as part of a 6-0 run and the Buckeyes would take their largest lead of the game at 72-47 with eight minutes to play. The lead would again hit 25 late in the fourth after a Sheldon jumper as BC closed the game with a mini-run in the waning moments to provide the final score.

What They Said

  • Head Coach Kevin McGuff:
    Overall Thoughts..
“We played really, really hard tonight. Give Boston College credit, they played hard today as well, but I thought we were a little sloppy at times with some of our decision making. We certainly need to improve in that area. But overall, I’m really happy with how we came out and played hard coming off the other night.

On Jacy Sheldon in the full court press…
“She is so relentless. She plays so hard and is so quick and has great hands. She’d be great in whatever style we’d play but she is really good in the full court press.”

  •  Senior Rebeka Mikulasikova:
    On her game tonight…
“We played really well tonight. My teammates did a really good job in how they got me the ball. They made great passes, and I was confident when I was shooting tonight.

    On Jacy Sheldon…
“I love playing with Jacy. She is amazing. I don’t know how she does everything that she does. She pressures the ball and always seems to know where to go at the right time. It’s amazing to play with her.”
