COLUMBUS, Ohio–Ohio State sophomore guard Michael Redd was named the Big Ten’s Co-Player of the Week (Morris Peterson, Michigan State) Monday after his 30-point effort in a 78-70 overtime win over the Wisconsin in Madison last Saturday.
For Redd it was the second such honor of the season and the third for the Buckeyes. Junior Scoonie Penn was named the league’s first player of the week this season.
Redd leads the Buckeyes (12-3 overall, 2-0 in the Big Ten) in scoring with 20.1 points a game. He is averaging 25.5 in conference play.
Noting the win over Wisconsin Michael Redd led the Buckeyes to an overtime win No. 19 Wisconsin on the road with 30 points, which tied his second highest scoring effort in his career. Redd connected on 11 of 20 (.550) for the game, including a 1 of 3 effort from three-point range. He also knocked down 7 of 9 free throws (.778) in the win.
He scored 17-consecutive OSU points during one stretch, the final 12 to end the first half and the first five to begin the second. He scored his first points of the game with 7:42 to play in the first half to begin the run which ended when Ken Johnson hit a jumper with 16:06 to play in the second half breaking Redd’s streak. Redd hit the next shot (14:56) for the Buckeyes giving him 19 of 21 points from 7:42 of period one to 14:56 of the second half.
The 30 points was just two shy of his career-high of 32 set against Penn State (2/28/98). The 30-point effort tied the outing he had against USC (12/15/97).
The overtime win for the Buckeyes was the first on the road since a 79-77 victory over Northwestern (1/11/86).
The OSU overtime win was against UT-Chattanooga in Columbus 84-83 Dec. 15, 1994. Ohio State last faced Wisconsin in an overtime game Feb. 26, 1977, an OSU 82-80 victory.
The Buckeyes are 4-2 all-time against Wisconsin in overtime games.
The last time the Buckeyes defeated a ranked team in overtime was Feb. 23, 1993 when Ohio State downed No. 1 Indiana in Columbus 81-77.
The win over No. 19 Wisconsin was the first win over a ranked opponent for OSU since a 73-67 win over No. 17 Indiana Jan. 30, 1997.
The win broke a 10-game losing streak to ranked opponents.
The last road win over a ranked opponent was a 73-71 win at No. 8 Michigan Jan. 2, 1997.
The Buckeyes will face five ranked opponents in its next six games.
The win over Wisconsin gave the Buckeyes its first win of the season when trailing at the half (1-3). Ohio State entered the game 11-0 when leading at the half.
Junior Ken Johnson has recorded back-to-back career highs in blocks. He had 11 vs. Miami and 12 vs. the Badgers.
Freshman Boban Savovic had a career high three 3-pointers against Wisconsin.

The Buckeyes improved to 75-53 against Wisconsin.
