Buckeye senior among top amateurs competing this weekend at the Ocean Forest Golf Club

COLUMBUS, Ohio Vaughn Snyder, a senior on the Ohio State men’s golf team, is throwing his hat into another competitive field this weekend at the Jones Cup Invitational played at Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga., Feb. 6-8.

The 54-hole, three-day stroke play event features one of the strongest fields in amateur golf. This year seven of the Top 20 Golfweek amateurs in the world will be in the field. It also features seven of the Top 20 college players from the latest Golfweek/Sagarin collegiate rankings, including Snyder.

The Jones Cup Invitational, a biennial amateur competition, was first contested in 2001 and was born from the A.W. Jones family and its commitment to amateur golf.

Snyder, a native of Massillon, Ohio, was recently named Ohio Golfer of the Year for 2008 by Ohio’s Golf Magazine and the Ohio Golf Group.

The Buckeye tri-captain is coming off a runner-up finish at the 78th annual Dixie Amateur held Dec. 20-23 at the Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla., among his many other accomplishments in 2008. Along with his two collegiate victories this fall at the Memphis Intercollegiate and Turtle Bay Resort Invitational, he won the 102nd Ohio Amateur last summer.

This fall, Snyder led the Buckeyes with a stroke average of 71.27 and is ranked 18th as an individual in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Seven of his 11 rounds were even-par or lower with three rounds in the 60’s.

Ocean Forest, site of the Jones Cup Invitational, is a Rees Jones design which opened in 1995 and has hosted the 1998 Georgia State Amateur Championship, the 1999 Southern Amateur Championship and the 2001 Walker Cup Match.
