Ohio State fires a season-low team score of 4-under 280, sits three strokes back from leader Illinois

COLUMBUS, Ohio Led by Vaughn Snyder and Bo Hoag with opening rounds of 66 and 68, respectively, the Ohio State men’s golf team sits in second place after the first round of the FAU Spring Break Championship Friday in Delray Beach, Fla.

The Buckeyes began the tournament on a high note with a season-low team score of 4-under 280 on the par 71, 6,722-yard Gleneagles Country Club. They are just three strokes back from Big Ten foe Illinois, who leads the 14-team field.

Snyder birdied five of his final eight holes en route to his season-low score of 66. He is tied for third and just two strokes off the lead. The senior from Massillon, Ohio, totaled seven birdies with two on par 3s, four on par 4s and one on a par 5. His only hiccups were bogeys on Nos. 3 and 10 while tallying his fifth round of the 60’s this season.

Hoag continued his steady play with a bogey-free round and also carded a season-low with his 68. The sophomore from Upper Arlington, Ohio, is eighth and in the hunt for his third-consecutive Top 10 finish. He birdied Nos. 9, 10 and 14 while making par on the other 15 holes.

Sophomores Michael Cress and Brad Smith each opened with a round of 73 to tie for 26th. Cress made par on 14 holes with a birdie and three bogeys for a solid round and a season-low score. Smith was 2-over in his first nine holes, but settled down after the turn and closed out the back nine even.

Junior Patrick Simard, playing in his first tournament since November, is tied for 42nd with a score of 75. He stumbled out of the gates at 5-over but closed out his round 1-under and made par on the last five holes.

There also are three Buckeyes playing as individuals in the event. Junior Brad Wright led that group with a 72 to tie for 19th. His only blemish was a double-bogey on the par 4 No. 13. Sophomore Tanner Murphy opened with a 74 to tie for 32nd and senior Dan Rush had a 78 to tie for 67th.

The FAU Spring Break Championship continues with 18 holes Saturday before concluding with a final round Sunday. Live scoring is available on
