Sophomore Bo Hoag has strong first round of 1-under 71 to tie for sixth

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. After waiting through an hour and a half delay Thursday morning, the Ohio State men’s golf team battled hard greens on the hilly par 72, 7,372-yard course at the Club at Olde Stone for a opening score of 12-over 300 in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional. The Buckeyes are in ninth place, but only four strokes back from Louisville and Mississippi in a tie for fifth.

Top-seeded Washington ran away to the top of the leaderboard at 6-under and holds a 10-stroke lead over Georgia Tech and UCLA in a tie for second. The Top 5 teams from each of the six regional sites advance to the NCAA championships, May 27-30 in Toledo.

Thunderstorms battered the Bowling Green, Ky., area in the early hours, pushing back the starting tee times to 10 a.m., but the clouds cleared for sunny and slightly humid conditions in the afternoon.

Leading the Ohio State lineup was sophomore Bo Hoag with a 1-under 71. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native continued his steady play and was even on the front nine and 1-under on the back with two birdies and a bogey.

Hoag is tied for sixth and was just one of nine players out of the 75-player field to shoot under par. It was his eighth round under par this season. He is in the hunt for his sixth Top 10 finish in the last seven events.

Senior Vaughn Snyder had a strong start and was 1-under through the turn, but then stumbled on his last nine holes. The tri-captain from Massillon, Ohio, finished his first round at 3-over with a 75 and is tied for 30th.

Tied for 44th are sophomore Michael Cress and junior Brad Wright, who both shot a 77. It is the first NCAA event for both Buckeyes.

Rounding out the Buckeyes is sophomore Brad Smith, who is 74th after struggling to an 87.

Ohio State will begin second round action at the regional Friday off of the No. 10 tee between 10:10-10:50 a.m. Live scoring is available on
