Ohio State solid in tune up for the 40th Annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate next weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s golf team won a quad meet over three in-state foes Saturday on its own par 71, 7,455-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus. The Buckeyes had a 36-hole total of 19-over 729 to best second-place Cleveland State by 29 strokes.

Dayton (773) and Youngstown State(796)  finished third and fourth, respectively. Each school played six players with the best five scores counting toward the team total.

Sophomore Bo Hoag, who has three-consecutive Top 10 finishes, was individual medalist with a 36-hole total of 1-under 141. He defeated Jake Scott of Cleveland State by five strokes.

Hoag started out his morning 18 with nine-consecutive pars before carding three birdies and three bogeys on the back nine for an even par 71. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native was able to birdie the always difficult 209-yard, par 3 17th hole. In the afternoon, Hoag shot a 1-under 70, which included three birdies.

Senior tri-captain Vaughn Snyder also capitalized on the home course throughout his first 18. The native of Massillon, Ohio, had 13 pars, three bogeys and two birdies for a round of 72. Snyder shot a 4-over 75 during his second round.

After a rocky opening nine of 43, sophomore Michael Cress played flawlessly on the back nine with a 1-under 34. He carried that over to the afternoon when he shot a round of 1-under 70, which included an eagle on the par 5, fourth hole. Over his final 27 holes, the Dublin, Ohio native was 2-under par.

Junior Patrick Simard and sophomore Brad Smith each finished at 6-over 148. Simard tallied two rounds of 74 while Smith had 75-73.

Rounding out the Buckeyes was junior Brad Wright who battled back after a morning round 79 to shoot 73 for a total of 152.

The event a make-up to the lost day at the Memphis Intercollegiate last October and as a tune up to next week’s Robert Kepler Intercollegiate.  The final round in Memphis was cancelled because of inclement weather. The Buckeyes won the rain-shortened event by three strokes over the University of Memphis, while Snyder took his first of two medalist honors in the fall season.

Next weekend, the Buckeyes will play host for the 40th Annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate April 11-12. The 14-team field will play 54 holes over two days at the Scarlet Course.
