Patrick Simard tied for ninth, Ohio State nine shots back going into final round

COLUMBUS, Ohio  After day one of the 40th Annual Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, the Ohio State men’s golf team sits in fifth place with a 36-hole total of 606 (+38). The Buckeyes were in second place following the morning 18, but stumbled in the afternoon as the winds picked up at the par 71 7,455-yard Scarlet Course.

Northwestern leads the tournament at 29-over. Trailing by one is East Tennessee State with Kent State one shot back of ETSU. Ohio State is nine shots behind Northwestern.

Junior Brad Wright, competing as an individual, is leading the tournament after shooting two solid rounds of even-par. Wright had seven birdies and on a day when par was a great score, the Cambridge, Ohio, native had 23 of them. He holds a three-shot lead over East Tennessee State’s Seamus Power. Wright leads the field in par-5 scoring, going 5-under on the day, and also leads the field in birdies, collecting 7 on the day. He is second in par-4 scoring at 3-over.

Patrick Simard, a junior from Marbella, Spain, is tied for ninth at 7-over for the tournament. He was in sixth after 18 holes, shooting a 73 in the morning. In the afternoon, Simard was 4-over after five holes, but battled back playing 1-over the rest of the round for a 76. He leads the field in par-4 scoring at 2-over and is second with six birdies on the day.

Senior Vaughn Snyder shot two 75’s. The native of Massillon, Ohio, is tied for 14th at 8-over 150.

Sophomore Bo Hoag had a consistent morning round, finishing with a 2-over 73. A bad front-nine in the afternoon kept Hoag from being in contention. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native, who is seeking a fourth-consecutive Top 10 finish, shot a 78 on an otherwise good day.

Sophomores Brad Smith and Michael Cress round out the Buckeyes. Smith is tied for 33rd after shooting rounds of 75-80 for 13-over par. Cress struggled most of the day and is tied for 57th at 18-over after rounds of 78-82.

The final 18 holes of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate will be played Sunday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
