COLUMBUS, Ohio– Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), the No. 1 singles player for the Ohio State men’s tennis team, begins play in the 2001 NCAA Singles Championship at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia, runs through Monday, May 28 after the event was pushed back one day because of rain.

Metz enters the tournament with a No. 36 national ranking and a 36-10 record on the year. His first round opponent is University of Georgia junior Chad Carlson who is 24-4 on the year and holds a national ranking of No. 47. Playing on his home court in the team tournament Wednesday, Carlson scored a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision in the No. 4 singles position over Tennessee’s Adam Carey to clinch Georgia’s fourth national title. Neither Metz nor Carlson are seeded in the tournament.

The winner of the Metz-Carlson match will battle the winner of the Takeshi Itoh (New Mexico)-Ramsey Smith (Duke) match Friday. Smith is a 9-16 seed in the tournament and is ranked No. 20 in the nation. Itoh is not nationally ranked.
