%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – Phillip Metz (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), the No. 1%^$singles player for the Ohio State men’s tennis team, won his opening match%^$Thursday to begin play in the 2001 NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan%^$Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The singles tournament, hosted by the%^$University of Georgia, runs through Monday, May 28.%^$

Metz entered the tournament with a No. 36 national ranking. He%^$improved to 37-10 on the year with a 6-2, 3-1 victory over University of%^$Georgia junior Chad Carlson (24-5).%^$

Carlson, ranked of No. 47, was forced to retire in the%^$second set because of injury. Playing on his home court in the team%^$tournament Wednesday, Carlson scored a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision in the No. 4%^$singles position over Tennessee’s Adam Carey to clinch Georgia’s fourth%^$national title.%^$

Metz will battle Ramsey Smith (Duke) Friday. Smith is a 9-16 seed in%^$the tournament and is ranked No. 20 in the nation. He defeated Takeshi Itoh%^$of New Mexico 6-4, 6-1 to advance.
