State College, Pa. – The Ohio State (1-0) men’s volleyball team opened the season with a 15-8, 15-12, 15-8 win over Penn State (0-1) Tuesday night in Rec Hall. Buckeye middle hitters Colin McMillan and Rene’ Esteves combined for 33 kills and 12 blocks in leading Ohio State to the win. McMillan had 18 kills, hit .625 and added two aces, three digs and six assist blocks while Esteves had 15 kills, hit .346 with two digs and six total blocks (2 solo and four assist). Outside hitters Jose Pereira added 17 kills and Phil Kerewich had 10.
Penn State was led by Sergio Pampena with 19, Tony Mazzullo, 15 and Brad Miller 11.
Ohio State had the edge in team totals with a .352 hitting percentage to .228 for Penn State. The Buckeyes outblocked the Nittany Lions, 13 to 9.5 and had a 26 to 21 advantage in digs. OSU scored on four aces serves to none for Penn State.
The Buckeyes return home this weekend to face Brigham Young (2-0) Friday and Saturday night in St. John Arena at 7 p.m.
