COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Ohio State (15-7 overall) men’s volleyball team, behind a match-high 16.5 points from Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) defeated Rutgers-Newark (6-18), in a three game (30-27, 30-20, 30-28) sweep Saturday night in St. John Arena. Klein had 13 kills in the match, adding two ace serves, one solo block and one assist block. Kenny Rienecker recorded a team-high 10.5 points for Rutgers-Newark with nine kills and three assist blocks.
After a Klein kill opened game one, kills from Kenneth Stumbaugh and Rienecker and a Nate Stott ace serve gave Rutgers-Newark a 3-1 lead. A Klein kill and a Scarlet Raider error tied the game at three. Tied at nine, a Kevin Heine (So.-Fr., St. Louis, Mo.)-Klein block and back-to-back ace serves from Jason Tobkin (So.-Fr., Fairfield, Ohio) gave Ohio State a 12-9 lead. A Buckeye error made it 12-10. A Heine kill and a Rutgers-Newark error gave the Buckeyes a four-point lead at 14-10. At 19-16, an OSU error and a Stott kill cut the lead to one at 19-18. Leading 25-24, a Heine kill gave OSU a 26-24 lead. A Buckeye error and a Stott-Rienecker-Stumbaugh block tied the game at 26. A Scarlet-Raider error gave OSU a 27-26 lead. Stumbaugh tied the game at 27 with a kill. The Buckeyes took a 28-27 lead from a Rutgers-Newark error. OhioState reached game point at 29-27 with a Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio )-Ted Schoenfeldt (So., Northbrook, Ill.) block. A solo block by Klein ended the game for OhioState at 30-27. Rutgers-Newark hit .333 for the game to .258 for OhioState.
With game two tied at two, a Heine kill, a Scarlet-Raider error and an ace serve from Daniel Mathews (Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) put OhioState ahead, 5-2. At 11-9, OSU, a Jon Keller kill and a Jeff Zornig-Keller block tied the game at 11. A Buckeye error gave Rutgers-Newark a 12-11 lead. A Scarlet Raider error tied the game at 12. Tied at 14, a Ben Spurlock (Sr.-So., Stow, Ohio)-Schoenfeldt block and a Schoenfeldt kill opened a 16-14 OhioState lead. A Rienecker kill cut the lead to 16-15. Buckeye kills from Schoenfeldt and Tokin gave OhioState an 18-15 lead. At 22-19, a Klein kill and a Rutgers-Newark error made it 24-19. Errors by both team moved the score to 25-20. A Tobkin-Schoenfeldt-Heine block and a Scarlet-Raider error gave OSU a 27-20 lead. A Tobkin kill and a Rutgers-Newark error set game point at 29-20. Heine, with a kill, ended the game at 30-20 for OhioState and gave the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. OhioState hit .375 for the game to .143 for Rutgers-Newark.
A Schoenfeldt kill and two Rutgers-Newark errors gave OhioState a 3-1 lead in game three. A Tobkin ace serve opened a four-point lead at 11-7 for OhioState. A Stott kill and three OSU errors tied the game at 11. Tied at 14, a Heine kill and a Klein ace serve put OSU ahead, 16-14. Leading 18-16, a solo block by Mathews, a Schoenfeldt kill and a block by Mathews-Spurlock gave the Buckeyes a 21-16 lead. OSU held the lead to reach match point at 29-27 with a solo block by Mathews. A Stott-Stumbaugh block stopped the match point at 29-28. OhioState won the game, 30-28, off a Rutgers-Newark error to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .158 for the game to .100 for the Scarlet-Raiders.
For the match, OhioState hit .257 to .193 for Rutgers-Newark. The Buckeyes had a 46-38 margin in kills and an eight to three advantage in ace serves. Tobkin equaled his career high with three aces. OhioState gave up 12 service errors to 11 for the Scarlet Raiders. Defensively, OSU edged Rutgers-Newark, 25-24 in digs. Scarlet Raider Derek Wolfe and OSU’s Mathews and Klein shared match-high honors with six digs each. At the net, OhioState had an 11.5 to 8.5 margin in team blocks. For the Buckeyes, Mathews recorded a match-high six total blocks with a career-high three solo blocks and three assists. At setter, Mathews posted 39 assists while Zornig had 35 for the Scarlet Raiders.
OhioState returns to conference play in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Buckeyes play at IPFW (12-11).
