COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University men’s volleyball program has earned AVCA Team Academic Award honors for the second straight year, announced as one of just 24 collegiate men’s volleyball teams across all divisions/levels to receive the national recognition for 2017-18.
To be eligible, a program must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale (4.1 GPA on a 5.0 scale) for the academic year.
Thirteen collegiate men’s programs have accomplished the academic feat in both 2017 and 2018, including the Ohio State Buckeyes.
On the court, Ohio State advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Semifinals and concluded the season with an overall record of 25-6 after winning both the MIVA regular season and MIVA Tournament titles for the third straight year as well.
Ninety-two percent of eligible student-athletes (13 of 14) earned Academic All-Big Ten honors (freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible) while 17 team members picked up MIVA Academic All-Conference and OSU Scholar-Athlete laurels.
Nicolas Szerszen and Sanil Thomas took it one step further, each named 2018 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
