COLUMBUS, Ohio- – The Ohio State men’s tennis team competed in the Big Ten Singles Championship Nov. 15-17 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Buckeye sophomore Dennis Mertens (So., Braaschatt, Belgium) advanced to the quarterfinal round where he fell, 6-2, 6-3, to No. 2 seed Andrew Formanczyk of Michigan State. Mertens went 3-1 in the event and extended his tournament record to 9-3 this season. He defeated opponents from Northwestern, Purdue and Michigan.

Newcomer Joey Atas (Fr., Baltimore, Md) also advanced in the tournament. Atas picked up two wins before he fell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, in the Round of 16 to No. 1 seed Michael Rubin of Michigan. Atas has a 5-3 record in tournament play at Ohio State.

Sophomore Scott Green (So., North Canton, Ohio) saw action in semifinal play of the first round consolation bracket after he suffered a loss in the opening round to Purdue’s David Robinson. He defeated opponents from Northwestern, Indiana and Penn State before falling, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, to Minnesota’s Brian Lipinski in the semifinal consolation round. Green went 3-2 in the event and is 7-5 in tournament action to date.

The Buckeyes will not see action again until the start of the new year. Ohio State travels to its final preseason tournament, the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, Jan. 6-11 in Milwaukee, Wis. The Buckeyes will play host to Xavier and Cleveland State in the home opener Jan. 23 at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
