COLUMBUS, Ohio-The No. 44 Ohio State men’s tennis won against No. 53 Northwestern, 4-3, at the Johnson Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill on Saturday. The Buckeyes post a 10-6 overall record, 4-1 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats fall to 7-9, 1-5 in the Big Ten.
Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) led the Buckeyes in the No. 1 position to victory over No. 4 (Midwest Region) Brad Erickson, 6-4, 7-6. Andrew Carlson (Jr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) followed suit with a win over Wildcat Joost Hol, 6-3, 6-4. Buckeye Phil Metz (Fr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) posted a win over Jackie Jenkins, 6-2, 6-0.
Doubles played a large role in Ohio State’s triumph over Northwestern. Metz and Porter teamed to defeat Northwestern’s Russell Bennett and Jenkins, 8-6. The duo of Derek DeFalco (Jr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and Bob Wellstein (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) produced the win to capture the doubles point for Ohio State. DeFalco/Wellstein defeated Jamie Sahara and Josh Axler, 8-3.
Ohio State will play No. 6 Illinois on the road tomorrow at noon (cst) in Champaign, Ill.
