COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s tennis team triumphed on Easter Sunday by holding Michigan State to a goose egg, 7-0, at the Stickney Tennis Center. OSU has not won six matches in the Big Ten since the 1994-95 season. The 1999-00 squad has matched the total wins in the Big Ten for the past four years (6). The last time Ohio State defeated the Spartans was six years ago during the 1993-94 campaign. The conference win over MSU assures Ohio State of the No. 4 standing at next week’s Big Ten Championships. The Buckeyes’ record improves to 12-9, 6-4 in the Big Ten and Michigan State falls to 7-19, 2-8 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes started the holiday with a sweep in doubles. Ohio State’s Derek DeFalco (Jr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and Bob Wellstein (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) quickly disposed of Goran Topalo and Jimmy McGuire (8-4). The No. 34-ranked duo of Andrew Carlson (Jr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) followed suit with a victory in a tight match against Michigan State’s Ken Kigongo and Mark Findling, 9-8(10). Phil Metz (Fr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Jon Scale (Fr., Actworth, Ga./Harrison) provided the final win for the sweep in doubles against Ivica Primorac and Francisco Trinidad, 9-8(4).
Each Buckeye defeated his opponents in straight set singles victories. Ohio State’s Porter led the way with a speedy 6-0, 6-3, win over Robert Topalo at the No. 2 position. Carlson, at the No. 1 position, also produced a goose egg over MSU’s Kigongo, 7-5, 6-0. Metz defeated Primorac, 6-2, 6-4, to continue on a four-match winning streak. Ohio State’s Vince Ng (Fr., Broadview Heights, Ohio/University) snapped a five-match losing streak with a win over Trinidad, 7-6(5), 6-1. DeFalco won against Goran Topalo (6-4, 6-4). Wellstein defeated McGuire (6-2, 6-4). Ohio State concluded regular season play Sunday but will be back on the road next week to play in the Big Ten Championships from April 27-30 at Bloomington, Ind.
