COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio State men’s tennis head coach Ty Tucker announced Swedish tennis player Martin Johansson (Jr., Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan HS) has signed a letter of intent to play tennis for the 2000-01 season.
Johansson comes to Ohio State ranked No. 4 in the National Junior College Athletics Association singles standings and No. 2 in doubles with former teammate Jesse Plote.
“We thought he was a little more mature than the other players we were looking at,” Tucker said. “We needed one more player with everyone returning to the team next season. We were looking for a player who could step in right away and be able to handle one of six spots in the Big Ten. He comes here as an experienced junior with two years of eligibility, I think he gives us the right mix of maturity on the team.”
“He is a strong guy,” Tucker said. “He is a left-handed player who serves and volleys and has a nice doubles game.”
Johansson will be transferring as a junior from Vincennes University in southern Indiana. During his two years at Vincennes, Johansson posted a 39-8 singles record and a 31-13 doubles record. Johansson was selected to the NJCAA All-America Second Team in 1999 after reaching the single’s finals of the NJCAA Division II Championships. He also was an All-America Honorable Mention in doubles after reaching the doubles semifinals at the NJCAA Division I Championships.
