COLUMBUS, Ohio- – Buckeyes Drew Eberly and Ross Wilson, members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, fell in the doubles title match Tuesday at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich. The OSU tandem suffered an 8-5 loss to the No. 1 seed Illinois’ Ryler DeHeart and G.D. Jones. Eberly and Wilson, 5-1 in tournament play, advanced to the final round after they defeated teammates Joey Atas and Chris Klingemann, 8-1, in semifinal action.
With their finals berth, Eberly (Fr., Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Wilson automatically qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championship Nov. 4-7 in Ann Arbor. The National Indoor Championship is the second of three national tournaments in the 2004-05 season.
Wilson (Jr., Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales) and doubles partner Scott Green (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) recently won the doubles championship title Oct. 10 at the ITA All-American Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn. With the crown, the pair became the first OSU doubles team to claim a national tournament title in program history. Green and Wilson registered four Top 25 wins at the All-American Championships and defeated New Mexico’s David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland, 9-7, en route to the title.
The Buckeye squad is back on the courts in fall tournament play at the ITA National Indoor Championships. Last season at the National Indoors, former Buckeye and All-American Jeremy Wurtzman took home the crown after he defeated the No. 2 player in the country. Wurtzman became the first singles player in OSU program history to win a national title. The title propelled him to his No. 1 ranking in the ITA Division I singles polls.
