COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s swimming team hosted the Ohio State Last Ditch NCAA Qualifier Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The meet provided swimmers one more chance to qualify for the 2008 NCAA Championships to be held March 27-29 in Federal Way, Washington.
The quartet of Daniel Novak, Felipe Travesso, Andrew Bretscher and Matt Voelker swam the 200-yard medley in 1:27.00, just barely a second shy of the NCAA “A” cut. Their time, however, moved the Buckeyes into 10th in the nation in the event.
Ohio State also saw terrific performances from Andrew Olson and Joel Elber. Olson finished in an NCAA “B” cut time and a career-best time of 1:37.30 in the 200 freestyle. In the 100 freestyle, Elber swam an NCAA “B” cut time of 44.49, which was also a career-best.
Freshman Chuck Allison finished the 100 butterfly in a career-best time of 49.27, while classmate Quincy Lee swam a career-best time of 1:48.93 in the 200 butterfly. Sophomore George Markovic finished in an NCAA “B” cut time and a career-best time of 1:38.13 in the 200 freestyle.
Andrew Misich’s time of 49.50 in the 100 backstroke was good enough to qualify him for the U.S. Open, to be held July 29 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Qualified swimmers will advance to the 2008 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships held on March 27-29 in Federal Way, Wash.
