COLUMBUS, Ohio The 13th-ranked Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team finished the second day of competition in 19th place at the 2008 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Federal Way, Washington.

Highlighting the evening was the performance of the 800-yard freestyle relay team. The squad of senior Matt Voelker, sophomore George Markovic, junior Jacob Busch and sophomore Andrew Olson broke their own school record on the way to a 12th-place finish in 6:28.78.

“We are all really excited for the guys,” Bill Wadley, head men’s swimming coach, said. “All four had great swims.”

Along with the record-breaking performance, Markovic, Busch and Olson also set career-best times at the 200-yard distance.

The Scarlet and Gray opened up the night with a 13th-place finish from its 200-yard medley relay team of senior Daniel Novak, junior Felipe Travesso, sophomore Andrew Bretscher and Voelker. The quartet finished in a time of 1:27.55.

“The medley relay has been swimming very well for us,” Wadley said. “We were very excited to have the opportunity to swim in the finals.”

Travesso and sophomore Sam Pelkey represented the Buckeyes in the preliminary round of the 100 breaststroke. Travesso swam a career-best time of 54.19, while Pelkey finished in 54.87. Novak also swam in the 100 backstroke preliminaries in a time of 49.97.

The NCAA Championships conclude Saturday. Prelims begin at 11 a.m. and finals begin at 7 p.m.
