COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s soccer team (8-4-0, 2-1-0) fell to the Penn State Nittany Lions (8-6-0, 3-2-0) today at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa., 1-0. The loss is Buckeyes’ first in conference play and snaps their six-game winning streak.
Penn State drew first blood when Chad Severs headed home a cross into left corner in the 22nd minute of play to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage in the first half of action. Brent Jacquette and Pasi Karpinnen were each credited with assists on the score.
In what turned out to be a foul plagued second-half of action in which the two teams combined for 19 fouls, the Penn State defense limited the Buckeye attack to just six shots. The Buckeyes failed to mount an offensive threat as the 1-0 lead would stick as Ryan Sickman picked up the shutout in the net for the Nittany Lions.
The Buckeyes will be back in action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Oakland in Rochester, Mich. Ohio State will then return home to face the fourth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers at 2 p.m. Sunday in an important Big Ten match at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
