COLUMUBS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team netted four goals in the first period and went on to defeat the Robert Morris University Colonials, 5-1, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in an exhibition match Saturday afternoon. The match serves as one of three exhibition matches the squad will play prior to its season opener Sept. 3 against Wake Forest in the 2004 Ohio State Classic.
The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the 19th minute as junior Kevin Nugent (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) collected a rebound goal off of Robert Morris goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski. In the 25th minute of play the Buckeyes once again found the back of the net when freshman Xavier Balc (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) knocked home a strike from 15 yards out off an assist from sophomore Brent Rohrer (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic). Two minutes later in the 27th minute Ohio State notched its third goal of the game as sophomore Taylor Korpieski (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored from 12 yards out after receiving a pass from teammates Dustin Kirby (So., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Peter Withers (Sr., Portland, Ore./Jesuit).
Robert Morris scored its only goal of the game in the 37th minute as midfielder Joe DiBsuono found the back of the net. Ohio State increased the lead back up to three as junior Kyle Veris (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) scored off a pass from senior Sammy Tamporello (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) in the 42nd minute to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Tamporello added a fifth Ohio State goal in the 69th minute off of a corner kick from Korpieski to put the Buckeyes up 5-1 where the score would remain.
Ohio State goalkeepers Casey Latchem (Fr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Ray Burse (Jr., Prospect, Ky./St. Xavier) directed the Buckeye defense.
The Buckeyes return to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. in an exhibition match against Pittsburgh at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
