Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team fell to Great Western Lacrosse League opponent Denver, 13-9, Friday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The loss ends the Buckeyes’ winning streak at five, dropping the team to 5-5 on the year and 2-1 in the conference. The Pioneers improve to 10-4 and take over sole possession of first place in the GWLL with a 3-0 ledger.

The Buckeyes return to action at noon Sunday when they host Air Force in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to close out the home schedule. The 10 Buckeye seniors will be honored before the game.

Buckeye senior Jason Bloom (r-Sr., Coquitlam, British Columbia/Centennial) had a personal-best two goals and three points against Denver, while junior Jason Lutz (Jr., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) had a career-best two assists and three points in the game. Freshman Joel Dalgarno (Fr., Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Western Reserve (Ohio). had two goals and an assist to extend his scoring streak to 10.

Denver led 6-3 at the end of the first quarter and 11-3 at halftime. The Pioneers scored the first two goals of the game before Lutz set up Bloom for OSU’s first goal at 7:20 of the first quarter. Denver’s Michael Goltra responded with a goal at 6:34. Buckeye Kevin Buchanan (So., Cockeysville, Md./Calvert Hall), assisted by Dalgarno, scored at 3:56 before DU went on a three-goal run, including a man-up tally from Brandon Barcus. Ben Wolff (Sr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall), assisted by Buchanan, stopped the Pioneer goal streak and scored the Buckeyes’ third goal of the game with eight seconds remaining in the first quarter. Denver scored all five goals in the second quarter to extend its lead. Joe Murray started the quarter with a tally at 8:19 before Brett Koll and Adam Miller scored 13 seconds apart, at 8:56 and 8:43, respectively. Sandon Olson Jr. and Geoff Snider closed out the quarter with goals at 4:05 and 2:39, respectively.

The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the third quarter when Lutz found Bloom for his second goal of the game to make the score 11-4. The Pioneers scored the next two goals, with Goodwin scoring at 5:08 and Todd Ruport adding a man-up tally at 4:17.

After that point, the Buckeyes mounted a comeback, scoring the final five goals of the game and holding the Pioneers scoreless for the final 19:17. Jon Rydberg (r-So., Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) scored at 4:07 following a faceoff win, followed by Lutz’s goal at 2:05 of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Josh Funk (So., Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) scored on a fast break at 8:27. Dalgarno scored the final two goals of the contest, assisted by Bloom at 4:46 and scoring unassisted at 1:06, for the 13-9 final.

Denver outshot the Buckeyes, 32-23. Buckeye goalie John Bolen (Fr., Potomac, Md./Landon) played all 60 minutes in the cage, making eight saves. Denver’s Jeb Hollingsworth stopped seven shots in 60:00.

The Buckeyes did not score on two man-up chances, while Denver was 2-for-6.

Game Notes
Dalgarno has at least one point in each of his games as a Buckeye. He leads the squad with 20 goals and 31 points this year. He has at least three points in each of his last seven games.

Buchanan has at least one point in every game this season and is on a seven-game goal-scoring streak. He has a career-best 17 goals, eight assists and 25 points this season and ranks third on the team in points.

Rydberg’s goal was the first of his career. He played in 11 games last season, but did not record a point.

Senior Andrew Bender had his eight-game goal and point streaks stopped.

Wolff extended his personal scoring streak to 22.
